A-Rod Suspended Through 2014, 12 Others Suspended 50 Games

Here’s your morning baseball briefing:

As a result of an MLB’s investigation into Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic in Miami run by fake physician Anthony Boesch, baseball has suspended another 13 players on Monday, including Alex Rodriguez, for their involvement in using PED’s (performance enhancing drugs) that violated Major League Baseball’s drug policy (Ryan Braun was already suspended last month for 65 games for his involvement).   Rodriguez was given the longest suspension at 211 games, to begin on Thursday, and the Commissioner’s Office cited his "use and possession of numerous forms of prohibited performance-enhancing substances, including testosterone and human growth hormone, over the course of multiple years" as the reason.   Rodriguez has decided to appeal his suspension and is eligible to play until he can be heard, which could come in November or December.  He made his season debut last night in Chicago to a chorus of boos, going 1-4.
The other 12 players were suspended 50 games and have accepted their punishments, effective immediately.  They are:  Texas OF Nelson Cruz, San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera, Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Philadelphia pitcher Antonio Bastardo, New York Mets outfielders Jordany Valdespin (minors) and Cesar Puello (minors), Seattle catcher Jesus Montero (minors), Houston pitcher Sergio Escalona (minors), New York Yankee catcher Francisco Cervelli (on DL), Yankee outfielder Fernando Martinez, and free agent pitchers Jordan Norberto and Faustino De Los Santos.

Game of the Day for Monday August 5:
Detroit Tigers 4,  Cleveland Indians 2
For the second blog in a row, the Indians are on the wrong side of the Game of the Day.  This time closer Chris Perez blew a 3-0 ninth inning lead at home as Alex Avial rocketed a three-run homer over the left field wall to give the Tigers the lead for good.  Joaquin Benoit pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save and as Detroit increased its’ division lead over Cleveland to four games.

News & Notes:  New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter was placed back on the DL for the third time this season with a strained hamstring.  He’s played in just five games this year.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have won a franchise record 15 consecutive road games, two shy of tying the National League record of 17 set by the 1916 New York Giants, and six shy of the all-time record.

History – 1959 World Series
Winner: The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 4 games to 2.
In just their second season in Los Angeles, the Dodgers were back in the World Series for the first time since 1956, having to beat the Milwaukee Braves two games to none in a best-of-three N.L. playoff as both they finished tied in the standings.  They would meet the Chicago White Sox, who won their first pennant in 40 years, last losing the 1919 World Series by conspiring with gamblers to be beat.
Chicago had home field advantage and they pounded the Dodgers 11-0 in Game 1 as slugging first baseman Ted Kluszewski belted two home runs.  Los Angeles tied the series with a 4-3 Game 2 win as second baseman Charlie Neal hit a pair of home runs, helping Johnny Padres (the hero of Game 7 in the 1955 World Series) pick up the win.
Games 3, 4 & 5 shifted to the west coast (becoming the only World Series games to be played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as Dodger Stadium was being built), and Dodger pitcher Don Drysdale beat the White Sox 3-1 in Game 3 with a dominating performance.  First baseman Gil Hodges’ eighth-inning home run of Game 4 broke a 3-3 tie as Los Angeles hung on to win 4-3, and take a 3-1 series lead.  Chicago managed just five hits in Game 5, but their lone run scored on a grounder in the fourth off Dodger starter Sandy Koufax was the difference as they won 1-0 to stay alive and send the series back to Chicago for Game 6.
In the sixth inning of Game 6 with the Los Angeles holding a slim 2-0 lead, Dodger hitters exploded for six runs on homers by Duke Snider and Wally Moon, and added another in the ninth on pinch-hitter Chuck Essegian’s World Series record second pinch-hit home run to make the score 9-3, and elevating the Dodgers to World Champions for the second time in five years, and their first in Los Angeles.  The win also marked the first Championship for a West Coast team, and was the first ever World Series in which no pitcher for either team pitched a complete game.
For the series the Dodgers were outscored by the White Sox 23-22, but narrowly outhit them 53-52.  Hall of Famers in the series included for Los Angeles: manager Walter Alston, outfielder Duke Snider, and pitchers Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax; and for the White Sox: manager Al Lopez, shortstop Luis Aparicio, second baseman Nellie Fox, and pitcher Early Wynn.
Tomorrow: 1960 World Series – New York Yankees vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
