Puig Dazzles Again as Dodgers Beat Phillies Late

Here’s your morning baseball briefing:

Game of the Day for Thursday June 27, 2013:
Los Angeles Dodgers 6, Philadelphia Phillies 4
The incredible story of Yasiel Puig continued Thursday night in Los Angeles as the Dodgers’ rookie singles home the tying and winning runs in the seventh inning to lift the Dodgers to their season best sixth straight win.  Puig is batting .427 with seven HRs and 16 RBI in his first 23 big league games.  Zach Greinke allowed four runs and 12 hits in seven innings for his fifth win, and the Dodgers appear mostly healthy now with the return of all-stars Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez.  Despite playing subpar all season, they find themselves just six games out of first place in the National League West.

History – 1937 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees beat the New York Giants 4 games to 1.
The Yankees and the Giants met again in the World Series (for the fifth time) in a rematch of the 1936 Fall Classic that had the Yankees beating the Giants in six games.  This time the Yankees prevailed again for their sixth overall title, and third out of five against the Giants.  The Yankees did not make a single error in the entire series, setting a record that can only be duplicated but never beaten.  The Yankees won Games 1 & 2 at home by an 8-1 score, with Hall of Famer pitchers Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez picking up wins.  The teams split Games 3 & 4 at the Polo Grounds as Lou Gehrig hit his last World Series home run in a Game 3 loss.  The Yankees closed out the Giants in Game 5 as Lefty Gomez allowed just two runs for his second series game win, and Joe DiMaggio hit hi first World Series home run as the Yankees won 4-2 to become consecutive world champions.  Their sixth World Series title broke a tie with the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox for most World Series titles, a record the Yankees still hold today by a wide margin.  The Yankees outscored the Giants 28-12, outhit them 42-40, and as mentioned above, committed no errors, to the Giants nine.  Hall of Famers in the series included for the Yankees: manager Joe McCarthy, outfielder Joe DiMaggio, first baseman Lou Gehrig, catcher Bill Dickey, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, and pitchers Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing; and for the Giants: shortstop Travis Jackson, pitcher Carl Hubbell, outfielder Mel Ott and first baseman Bill Terry.

Trivia - Today’s Question:  Before the Yankees won two straight World Series titles in 1936 & 1937, what was the last team to win consecutive World Series?

Yesterday’s Question: What year did Joe DiMaggio have his 56-game hitting streak?
Answer:  1941

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:  Over/Under 8 strikeouts for Matt Harvey Saturday against the Nationals.
Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 6 strikeouts by Stephen Strasburg today against Arizona.
Result:  Under.  Strasburg struck out 4 Arizona batters.
