Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game
of the Day for Tuesday 6/4: Philadelphia
7, Miami 3
Philadelphia
outfielder John Mayberry Jr. entered the game in the seventh as a pinch hitter in
a 2-2 tie, and would have to wait until extra innings to make his impact
known. He electrified the home crowd
Tuesday night by hitting a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the tenth inning
and lining another home run over the left field wall with the bases full in the
bottom of the eleventh to give the Phillies the dramatic win. It was just the 27th walk-off grand slam hit in major league history. Mayberry Jr. doubled his home run total for
the season and sent the Phillies home winners.
Rest
of the Day’s Scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later): 1. There
were four walk-off games on Tuesday; the Phillies walked-off with a grand slam,
the Braves and Brewers walked-off winners on tenth inning doubles, and the
Nationals walked off winners with a sacrifice fly.

History
– 1920 World Series
Winner: Cleveland
Indians defeated the Brooklyn Robbins 5 games to 2.
The
1920 World Series featured two teams that had never won a championship before,
and would be the last matchup to feature this until 1980. All seven games of the best-of-nine series were
won by the team that scored first, but the series is noted for its’ Game 5
records, all by Cleveland players, that witnessed the only World Series triple
play (unassisted by second baseman Bill Wambsganns), the first grand slam home
run (outfielder Elmer Smith), and the first home run hit by a pitcher (Jim
Bagby Sr.). The Indians were led by
hall-of-fame pitcher Stan Coveleski who won three of the five games, and Cleveland outscored
the Robbins 21-8 and outhit them 53-44 for their first World Series title. Hall-of-Famers in the series included for
Cleveland pitcher Coveleski, shortstop Joe Sewell, and outfielder Tris Speaker;
and for Brooklyn manager Wilber Robinson, pitcher Rube Marquad and outfielder
ZachWheat.
