Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game
of the Weekend:
Friday Night – Baltimore 7, Detroit 5
The
Orioles bats were stymied most of the night by Detroit starter Max Scherzer
(7-0) who pitched eight innings, allowed three runs and struck out 10, while
retiring the last 16 hitters he faced before manager Jim Leyland handed the
game over to his closer Jose Valverde to get the final three outs of the ninth
leading 5-3. And then magic happened
that sent the Baltimore crowd into a frenzy.
Outfielder Nick Markakis led off the inning with a home run on an 0-2
pitch that he reached down and pulled just barely over the right centerfield
fence, Adam Jones followed with a single and advanced to third on a Chris Davis
single, Valverde recorded two straight outs on popups, and then Chris Singleton
launched a three-run homer into the right field bleachers to complete the
comeback and lift Baltimore to a dramatic 7-5 win.
Rest

History
– 1918 World Series
Winner: Boston
Red Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 2.
The
Red Sox won their fifth World Series in five appearances, and beat the Cubs
despite scoring just nine total runs in the six games. It was the only series played entirely in
the month of September as World War I forced the premature end of the regular
season on September 1. Boston finally played
their home games in this series at Fenway Park after playing home World Series
games in 1915 & 1916 at the more expansive Braves Park, while the Cubs played
their home games in the series at Comiskey Park, home of the Chicago White Sox,
for the same reason. Babe Ruth won Game 1
for Boston by pitching a shutout, and won again in Game 4 while also batting
sixth. He remains the only starting World
Series pitcher to bat anywhere but ninth in the lineup. Carl Mays won the other two games for Boston
and this would be their last World Series title until 2004 while the Cubs still
haven’t won a title since 1908. Hall-of-Famers
in this series included for Boston pitcher Babe Ruth and outfielder Harry
Hooper; and for Chicago pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander, who didn’t play.
Trivia
- Today’s Question: The Boston Red Sox wouldn't win another World series until 2004, but they reached the World Series four times between 1918 and 2004. Name the years.
Yesterday’s
Question: What is the all-time record for most stolen bases by
one player in a game?
Answer: 6. That’s
the modern day record and it’s held by 5 players; Eddie Collins twice in 1912
(10 days apart), Otis Nixon in 1991, Eric Young in 1996, and most recently Carl
Crawford in 2009. Officially though,
George Gore and Billy Hamilton each stole 7 bases in 1881 and 1884
respectively.
