Here’s your
daily baseball briefing:
Game of the Day for Tuesday June 25, 2013:
New York
Yankees 4, Texas Rangers 3
It was a
highly anticipated game featuring two Japanese aces with ERA’s under 3.00, and
it was the long ball that did both of them in as neither wound up with a
decision. Texas starter Yu Darvish
surrendered home runs to Travis Hafner, Brett Gardner & Jayson Nix in just
over five innings, while Kuroda gave up two blasts to Leonys Martin in just
over six innings. The game was tied
heading into the ninth when Mariano Rivera retired the Rangers in order, but
with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, fellow Japanese player Ichiro Suzuki homered to end the game
and make walk-off winners of Rivera and the Yankees.

History –
1935 World Series
Winner: The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 2.
The Tigers were playing in their second consecutive World
Series, losing to the Cardinals in 1934, while the Cubs won the N.L. pennant after
winning 21 games in September to overtake the Cardinals and advance to their
seventh World Series. After splitting
the first two games in Detroit, the Tigers won the next two in Chicago by one
run each (6-5 in 11 innings and 2-1), and the Cubs won game five 3-1, sending the
series back to Detroit for Game 6. There
pitcher Tommy Bridges pitched a complete game for the Tigers and they scored
the series winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Hall of Fame
outfielder Goose Goslin singled home the winning run in front of the home
crowd. It was the first World Series win
for the Detroit Tigers franchise, having lost in ’07, ’08, ’09 & ’34, and
the fifth World Series loss for the Chicago Cubs, fourth in a row. The Tigers outscored the Cubs 21-18 and
outhit them 51-48. Hall of Famers in
this series included for the Tigers: catcher/manager Mickey Cochrane, second
baseman Charlie Gehringer, outfielder Goose Goslin, and first baseman Hank
Greenberg; and for the Cubs: catcher Gabby Hartnett, outfielder Chuck Klein and
third baseman/outfielder Freddie Lindstrom.
Trivia -
Today’s Question: When was the last year the Chicago Cubs made the World
Series?
Yesterday’s
Question: Hall of fame first baseman Hank
Greenberg was originally offered a contract by the New York Yankees, but he
refused to sign with them because they already had an established first
baseman. Who was it?
Answer: Lou
Gehrig
