Harvey Dominates Braves in Atlanta Heat

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Game of the Day for Tuesday June 18, 2013:
New York Mets 4 Atlanta Braves 3
The second game of this five-game series, and first of the doubleheader, flirted with history as Mets starter Matt Harvey (6-1) dominated Atlanta hitters with his fastball that topped out at 100 mph.  He took a no-hit bid into the seventh and ended up allowing three hits while striking out a career-high 13, only to leave the game hanging to the bullpen with two outs in the eighth.  After Harvey exited up 4-0 but with three Braves on base, the Mets allowed three runs to score before closer Bobby Parnell, the fourth pitcher of the inning struck out Chris Johnson to end the threat.  Parnell would close out the Braves in the ninth to preserve the win for Harvey.

History – 1930 World Series
Winner: Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 2.
This would be the fifth World Series title for the Athletics, and last in Philadelphia before moving to Kansas City in 1955 and Oakland in 1968, where they would go on to win four more titles.  These Philadelphia Athletics were built on pitching behind ace Lefty Grove (28-5) and no. 2 man George Earnshaw (22-13), and each would win two World Series games.  They faced the Cardinals who led the National League in average runs scored per game with six, but they would manage just a two average in this series.  Philadelphia future hall of famers Al Simmons (OF), Jimmie Foxx (1B), and Mickey Cochrane (C) combined to hit five home runs as the A’s outscored the Cardinals 21-12 for their second consecutive title.  Other hall of famers in this series included for the A’s manager Connie Mack and pitcher Lefty Grove; and for the Cardinals manager Bill McKechnie, first baseman Jim Bottomley, pitchers Jesse Haines and Burleigh Grimes, outfielder Chick Hafey, and second baseman Frankie Frisch.
