Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game
of the Day for Tuesday 6/4 Houston 2, Los Angeles Angels 1
The Astros completed a four-game sweep in Anaheim in
what might be the lowest point of the season for the Angels. Chris Carter homered and Erik Bedard pitched
seven solid innings as Houston completed their with a six-game winning streak
despite having only three hits. They’ve
now beaten the high payroll Angels in six of ten meetings this year, and
currently own the majors longest active winning streak.
Rest
of the Day’s Scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later): 0. No
walk-off wins happened on Monday.
A.L.
MVP Watch: Mark
Teixeira, 1B, New York Yankees. Teixeira
returned to the Yankees last week and belted his first home run on Monday, a
grand slam that hopefully means he won’t have another slow start to his
season. History shows that even players
who miss a month or more can still win the MVP.
N.L.
MVP Watch: Domonic
Brown, OF, Philadelphia Phillies. Brow
continued his torrid stretch by going 3-4 on Monday with his 17th home run and
his ninth is his last ten games. He’s on
pace to hit .290 with 47 HRs and 117 RBI.
News
& Notes: A
Jackie Robinson glove that’s believed to be used during the 1955 & 1956
World Series was auctioned off for $373,000.
History
– 1919 World Series
Winner: Cincinnati
Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox 5 games to 3.
The
1919 World Series is one of only four World Series to be played in the
best-of-nine format (1903, ’20, & ’21 the others), partly to attract
popularity to the game but mostly to increase gate revenue. However it will always be remembered for the
Black Sox scandal that involved several White Sox players conspiring with
gamblers to sabotage the series intentionally so they would lose. In 1921 eight White Six players were suspended
for life my Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis (baseball’s first
commissioner, elected in 1920) for fixing the series or having knowledge of
it. The White Sox won the 1917 World
Series and lost several players to World War I duty in 1918 before returning to
the Fall Classic in 1919. Led by
Shoeless Joe Jackson and Eddie Collins, the White Sox went into the series as
favorites but history shows that owner Charlie Comiskey was so eager to pinch
pennies and make a buck that he treated the Sox players very unfairly;
regularly holding back performance bonuses and refusing to allow the teams’
uniforms to be cleaned. The Reds jumped
out to a 4-1 series lead before losing two straight and finally finishing off
the White Sox in the eighth game. The
Reds outscored the White Sox in the series 35-20 and outhit them 64-59, and
White Sox outfielder Shoeless Joe Jackson hit .375 and collected 12 hits (a
record at the time) despite later being convicted of conspiracy and being
banned from baseball. Hall-of-Famers in
the series included for Cincinnati outfielder Ed Rousch; and for Chicago second
baseman Eddie Collins, pitcher Red Faber (did not play), and catcher Ray
Schalk.
Trivia
- Today’s Question: Shoeless Joe Jackson had a career
batting average of .356 which ranks third all-time. Who ranks first and second respectively?
Yesterday’s
Question: The Boston Red Sox wouldn't win another World Series
until 2004, but they reached the World Series four times between 1918 and
2004. Name the years.
Answer: 1946, 1967, 1975 &
1986
