Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game of the Day for Wednesday June 12, 2013:
Arizona
Diamondbacks 8, Los Angeles Dodgers 6 (12 innings)
For the third consecutive day, the Dodgers-Diamondbacks game
receives the headliner as the top game in baseball. One day after several players were hit by
pitches and benches erupted in a brawl, the two teams played peaceful and
exciting baseball that lasted 12 innings and included 32 hits. Arizona scored four times in the top of the 12th
capped by Cody Ross’s two-run double to break the tie as they held on to win
8-6. The Diamondbacks are now 8-2 in
extra inning games this season and 6-1 on the road.
Rest of
the Day’s Scores:

Eric Hosmer ended the game with a tenth inning RBI single.

History –
1926 World Series
Winner: St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Yankees 4 games to 3.
This was the first World Series appearance for the Cardinals
and they would go on to defeat the Yankees for their first ever championship
(they would win 10 more), while the Yankees were in their fourth World Series
is six years, having won in 1923. The
teams split the first two games before Jesse Haines shut down the Yankees with
a complete-game five-hit shutout in Game 3, with two of those hits coming by
hall-of-famer Lou Gehrig. In Game 4 Babe
Ruth belted three home runs in a 10-5 Yankee win to tie the series, the first
player ever to hit three homers in a World Series game, a feat that would be equaled
four times since. The Yankees won Game 5
after tying the score in the top of the ninth when Gehrig scored after leading
off with a double, and won the game in the tenth on Tony Lazzeri’s sacrifice
fly with the bases loaded. Game 6 was
played back at Yankee Stadium where the home crowd expected to watch their team
win their second World Series, but the Cardinals routed New York 10-2 behind
pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander who pitched his second complete game of the
series. Game 7 was played back in St.
Louis at Sportsman’s Park and would come down to the wire. St. Louis led 3-2 going into the seventh when
Grover Cleveland Alexander was called upon again to finish the Yankees just one
day after he pitched a complete game shutout.
Alexander retired the Yankees in the seventh and eighth innings, led off
the ninth by walking Babe Ruth, and what happened next surprised everybody. Ruth tried to steal second base and was out
by about 10 feet, ending the World Series and marking the only time a World
Series ended on a caught stealing. Ruth
put his head down and quietly walked off the field as the Cardinals celebrated their
first ever World Series title. St. Louis
outscored New York 31-21 and outhit them 65-54.
Hall-of-Famers in this series included for the Cardinals second baseman/manager
Rogers Hornsby, pitchers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Jesse Haines, first
baseman Jim Bottomley and outfielder Chick Hafey; and for the Yankees manager
Miller Huggins, outfielders Babe Ruth & Earl Combs, first baseman Lou
Gehrig, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, and pitchers Herb Pennock and Wait Hoyte.
