Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game of the Day for Thursday June 13, 2013:
Oakland
Athletics 3, New York Yankees 2 (18 innings)
The A’s completed the series sweep of the Yankees in Oakland
with an 18-inning walk-off win thanks to Nate Frieman’s bloop single that
scored John Jaso from third base. Both
teams scored two runs by the end of the third inning, and the next 14 they
would go scoreless, with several dramatic plays that stopped scoring opportunities
wowing the crowd. Both teams threw out
runners at the plate, preserving the tie game and sending the game further into
extra innings. The A’s lead the A.L.
West with a 41-27 record and have now won 11 in a row at home, while the
Yankees have lost seven in a row in Oakland.
Rest of
the Day’s Scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later that immediately ends the game): 2. The
Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics & Baltimore Orioles all walked off winners
on Thursday, and all of them went extra innings.

a rib injury.

their opponent to three or fewer runs in 12 straight games now.
History –
1927 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees swept the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 games to
0.
The Yankees returned to the World Series after a devastating
loss in 1926, and this time they wouldn’t be denied. They featured Babe Ruth (.356, 60 HRs, 164
RBI) and Lou Gehrig (.373, 47 HRs, 175 RBI) in the prime of their careers, and they
led the American League in runs scored, hits, triples, home runs, base on
balls, batting average, slugging average and on base percentage. Historians have dubbed this team Murderer’s
Row and they are arguably the greatest teams in baseball history, having won a
then record 110 games. In this World
Series, Babe Ruth hit two home runs and the Yankees scored the series-winning
run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 at Yankee Stadium. Overall the Yankees outscored the Pirates 23-10
and outhit them 38-29. Hall-of-Famers in
the series included for New York manager
Miller Huggins, outfielders Babe Ruth & Earl Combs, first baseman Lou
Gehrig, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, and pitchers Herb Pennock and Wait Hoyte;
and for Pittsburgh third baseman Pie Traynor, and outfielders (and brothers)
Paul and Lloyd Waner.
