Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game of the Weekend for June 14-16, 2013:
Sunday – New York
Mets 4, Chicago Cubs 3
The New York
Mets have had very little go right for them this season, so nobody thought they
would come back from three runs down in the ninth to stun the Cubs yesterday,
but that’s exactly what they did. Matt
Garza pitched seven scoreless innings for the Cubs before handing it over to
the bullpen, and all seemed hopeless for the Mets who were just three outs away
from being swept by the lowly Cubs.
Marlon Byrd led off the ninth with a solo home run off Chicago closer
Carlos Marmol, followed by a walk issued to Lucas Duda, a single by John Buck,
a sacrifice bunt by Omar Quintanilla, and then the hammer fell when Kirk
Nieuwenhuis launched a three run homer to give the Mets the improbable walk-off
win and save the series sweep.
Rest of
the Weekend Scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later that immediately ends the game): 5 On Friday Cleveland
& Cincinnati walked off winners; on Saturday it was the Atlanta Braves who
walked off winners, and on Sunday the Mets came back from three runs in the
ninth to walk off winners 4-3.

eight RBI.
N.L. Player
of the Week: Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Colorado Rockies. Gonzalez hit .476 last week (10-21) with
three home runs (20) and eight RBI (56).
A.L. MVP

23rd home run and is on pace to hit .335 with 54 home runs and 140 RBI.
N.L. MVP

leading 20th home run. He’s on pace to
hit .317 with 47 HRs, 133 RBI, and 30 stolen bases.
History –
1928 World Series
Winner: New York Yankees swept the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 0.
The Yankees swept the World Series for the second
consecutive year, becoming the first team to do so. Babe Ruth led the assault on the Cardinals,
hitting .625 (10-16), including a three-homer effort in the series clinching Game
4. Lou Gehrig also had a tremendous
series, hitting four home runs and driving in 10 runs, as many as the Cardinals
scored the entire series. Hall of Fame
pitcher Wait Hoyte was the beneficiary of the Yankees offensive prowess,
winning two of the four games as he kept the Cardinals bats at bay. The Yankees outscored the Cardinals 27-10 and
out hit them 37-27 in a lopsided World Series win. Hall-of-Famers in this series included for
the Yankees manager Miller Huggins, outfielders Babe Ruth & Earl Combs,
first baseman Lou Gehrig, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, and pitcher Wait Hoyte;
and for the Cardinals manager Bill McKechnie, first baseman Jim Bottomley,
pitchers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Jesse Haines, outfielder Chick Hafey,
second baseman Frankie Frisch, and shortstop Rabbit Maranville.
Trivia -
Today’s Question: Babe Ruth hit three home runs in a single World Series game
twice (once in 1926 and again in 1928).

World Series game.
Yesterday’s
Question: Name another pair of brothers to be
enshrined in the baseball Hall-of-Fame?
Answer: None. No other brothers are enshrined in the
Baseball Hall of Fame.
Vegas
Bet: Lastly,
here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book: Over/Under 2 runs allowed by St. Louis starting
pitcher Shelby Miller against the Cubs.
Miller has a 2.21 ERA for the season.
Weekend
Bet: Over/Under 5 hits by Mike
Trout in the 3-game series with the Yankees this weekend.
Result: Push. Trout had exactly 5 hits in the weekend series with the
Yankees.
