Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game of the Weekend for June 6-9, 2013:
Friday Night – Miami Marlins 2, New York Mets 1 (20 innings)
The Marlins outlasted
the Mets in New York in the longest game in three years, taking almost six and
a half hours to complete this totally non-exciting and dreadful to watch game. Miami scored once in the top of the 20th
inning when Adam Hechavarria singled home Placido Polanco to finally end the
Mets’ misery. The Mets futility was
painfully obvious as they went 0-19 with runners in scoring position, a feat
only two other teams have reached in the last 40 years. The game featured 16 different pitchers, and
New York starting pitcher Shawn Marcum actually pitched eight innings in
relief, ironically his longest outing of the year. Your typical Mets fan will say this result
came as no surprise, even to the worst team in the National League. To make matters worse, on Sunday, the Marlins
won 8-4 in ten innings and completed the second consecutive weekend sweep of New York.
Rest of
the Weekend Scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later that immediately ends the game): 10 On
Friday night the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers & Colorado Rockies
all walked off winners; on Saturday the Toronto Blue Jays walked-off winners;
and on Sunday the Rockies one again walked-off winners in the tenth inning when
Dexter Fowler singled home the winning run to beat San Diego 8-7.
A.L.
Player of the Week: David Ortiz, DH, Boston Red Sox. Ortiz hit .289 last week with three home runs
and 12 RBI, including a walk-off three-run homer on Thursday.

and created a huge splash, hitting .464 with four home runs and eight RBI while

five games set a new major league record.
A.L. MVP

in his 50th run last week and is on pace to hit 44 HRs and drive in 133 runs.

History –
1923 World Series
Winner: New York Yankees defeated the New York Giants 4 games to 2.
The Yankees moved into Yankee Stadium for the start of the
1923 season, and finished it by beating the Giants for their first of 27 World
Series titles. This year marked the
third consecutive year the Giants & Yankees met in the World Series, a feat
that has never been duplicated. The
series alternated home field for each game, with the Yankees winning all three
games played at the Polo Grounds and just one at Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth led the Yankees with a .368 batting
average while swatting three home run, but rookie Lou Gehrig (called up late in
the year and only played in 13 games) had to sit and watch from the bench because
eligibility rules stated permission was needed from both the Commissioner of Baseball
and the opposing World Series manager for players called up so late in the
season. The Commissioner agreed, but
Giant’s manager John McGraw disagreed, gaining any advantage he could, but many
believe his long feuding history with the Yankees that included them sharing
the Polo Grounds was the deciding factor.
Even to this day, John McGraw is not received well by Yankee fans, and
this made it even easier to not like the guy.
In the Giants two wins, outfielder Casey Stengel hit game-winning home
runs, one an inside-the-park shot in cavernous Yankee Stadium. As mentioned yesterday, Stengel later went on
to manage the Yankees to seven World Series titles from 1949-1958. Hall-of-Famers in this 1923 World Series
included for the Yankees manager
Miller Huggins, pitchers Wait Hoyt & Herb Pennock, and outfielder Babe Ruth;
and for the Giants manager John McGraw, shortstop Dave Bancroft, second baseman
Frankie Frisch, shortstop Travis Jackson, first baseman George Kelley and
outfielder Casey Stengel.
Trivia -
Today’s Question: What is the
longest game ever played in major league baseball?
Yesterday’s
Question: Casey Stengel played outfield for the
Giants championship teams in 1921 & 1922 when they beat the Yankees, but
would enter the Hall-of-Fame as a manager after leading the Yankees to 7 World
Series. What year did Stengel take over the Yankees.
Answer: 1949
