Here’s your
daily baseball briefing:
Game of the Weekend for June 21-23, 2013:
Sunday – Pittsburgh Pirates 10, Los Angeles Angels 9
This game took a wild turn in the ninth inning when the
Pirates, trailing 6-3, tagged Angels closer Ernesto Frieri for three runs to
tie the game, and in the tenth scored four more times to take a 10-6 lead. Pirates closer and major league save leader Jason
Grilli pitched the bottom of the tenth and surrendered three runs to the Angels
and had men on second and third before striking out Mike Trout to end the
game. The Pirates completed the road
sweep with the win and have the second best record in baseball while the Angels
find themselves 11 games out of first place in what has been a very frustrating
season.
Rest of
the Weekend Scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later that immediately ends the game): 13 Friday
night the Toronto Blue Jays walked off winners against Baltimore; Saturday saw
the Phillies, Giants and Diamondbacks all walk off winners; and yesterday the
Seattle Mariners walked off winners in the tenth on Kendrys Morales’s pinch-hit
three-run home run.

History –
1933 World Series
Winner: New York Giants defeated the Washington Senators 4 games to
1.
The Giants had a new manager in 1933 after John McGraw
retired, and Bill Terry, the last player to hit .400 at this time, took over
for the hall-of-fame manager and beat the Senators in five games, thanks
largely to their pitching aces Carl Hubbell and Hal Schumaker, and two extra inning
wins in the final games. The Senators
were playing in their third World Series, having won in ’24 and lost in ’25. This was the first time in seven years that neither
the New York Yankees nor the Philadelphia Athletics won the American League
pennant. Hubbell and Schumaker combined
for three wins and just four runs allowed as the Giants outscored the Senators
16-11 and outhit them 47-37.
This was the Giants first World Series title since 1922 and
fourth overall (’05, ’21 & ’22).
Hall of famers in the series included for the Giants - manager/first baseman
Bill Terry, pitcher Carl Hubbell, outfielder Mel Ott and shortstop Travis
Jackson, and for the Senators - manager/shortstop Joe Cronin, and outfielders
Goose Goslin, Heinie Manush and Sam Rice.
Trivia -
Today’s Question:Who was the last player to hit more than 50 home runs in a
season? Who was the first?
Yesterday’s

many career home runs did Babe Ruth hit as a New York Yankee?
Answer: Ruth
hit 659 of his 714 career home runs with the Yankees.
