Papelbon Blows Another Save and Desmond Slams Phillies

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Game of the Day for Wednesday June 19, 2013:
Washington Nationals 6, Philadelphia Phillies 2 (11 innings)
Philadelphia closer Jonathan Papelbon blew a save for the second straight day in the ninth when he allowed a Jason Werth two-out RBI single to tie the game, and in the eleventh Ian Desmond launched a grand slam home run that won the game for Washington.  The Nationals avoided the three-game sweep and host Colorado over the weekend while the Phillies host the Mets.

Consecutive days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the ninth inning or later that immediately ends the game): 8  The Cincinnati Reds tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and won it in the 13th on a Brandon Phillips RBI single as they walked-off winners at home.

A.L. MVP Watch:  Chris Davis, 1B/OF, Baltimore Orioles.  Davis went 3-5 on Wednesday with two home runs (26) and five RBI (66), and is on pace to hit .337 with 58 HRs and 148 RBI.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Yasiel Puig, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers.  Puig went 4-9 in the doubleheader with the Yankees yesterday including hitting his fifth home run.  He’s on pace to hit .474 this year, but has only played in 15 games.

A.L. Cy Young Watch:  Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians.  He improved to 9-5 yesterday by beating the Royals with six and a third strong innings where he allowed just two runs while striking out eight.  He’s on pace to go 21-9 with 258 strikeouts.

N.L. Cy Young Watch:  Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants.  He beat the Padres yesterday for his seventh win as he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out 8 through seven innings.  He’s on pace to go 16-9 with 224 strikeouts and a 3.25 ERA.

History – 1931 World Series
Winner: The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Athletics 4 games to 3.
As the 1930’s continue, remember that there are only eight teams in each league.  In the American League you had the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Browns.  In the National League you had the New York Giants, Brooklyn Robbins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Braves and St. Louis Cardinals.
The 1931 World Series pitted a rematch of the 1930 World Series that had the Philadelphia Athletics winning in six games, and this series returned all but one starter from both teams so they knew each other fairly well.  St. Louis got their revenge in a dramatic seven game series thanks largely in part to pitcher Burleigh Grimes who won two games with his outlawed spitball.  You see in 1920 baseball forbid new players from throwing the spitball which can have ridiculous movement on it seeing as it’s loaded with spit, but older players who were already throwing it were somehow permitted to keep using it.  Grimes baffled the Athletics hitters and won Game 7 4-2 to give St. Louis their second World Series title.  Hall-of-famers in this series included for St. Louis first baseman Jim Bottomley, pitchers Jesse Haines and Burleigh Grimes, outfielder Chick Hafey, and second baseman Frankie Frisch; and for Philadelphia manager Connie Mack, outfielder Al Simmons, first baseman Jimmie Foxx, catcher Mickey Cochrane, and pitchers Lefty Grove and Waite Hoyt.

Trivia - Today’s Question:  What former New York Met pitcher led the team in wins during the 2000’s?

Yesterday’s Question: What team has been no-hit the most in major league history?
Answer:  The Philadelphia Phillies have been no-hit 16 times.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:  Over/Under 8 strikeouts by Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers tonight.

Yesterday’s Bet: Over/Under 6 times Don Mattingly makes a game trip to the mound where the Yankee fans cheer for him in today's doubleheader.
Result: 5.  Under.  Mattingly made five trips to the mound where the fans cheered for him.
