Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game of the Day for Thursday June 20, 2013:
Detroit
Tigers 4, Boston Red Sox 3
It seems that closers always take the blame for bad losses,
and mostly it does fall on them.
Thursday was no different as the Red Sox took a 3-2 lead in the eighth on
David Ortiz’s RBI single before handing the game over to their closer Andrew
Bailey to record the final three outs.
He immediately walked Victor Martinez before Jhony Peralta hit a
line-drive home run over the left field wall for the dramatic 4-3 Detroit. Bailey has now blown three of his last five
save chances, has a 15.75 ERA in this span, and has walked five and given up
four home runs, and has officially been demoted as Boston’s closer. The Red Sox will use Koji Uehara and Junichi
Tazawa to close games.
Rest of
the Weekend Scores:

Jhony Peralta’s blast in the ninth that won it and for Houston it was Carlos
Pena’s three-run shot that won the game.

History –
1932 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees swept the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 0.
This would be
the tenth and last World Series appearance for Babe Ruth who famously called
his Game 3 home run by pointing over the centerfield wall before hitting a
mammoth shot exactly there, stirring up controversy that isn’t settled to this
day. The Yankees were managed by Joe
McCarthy who led the Cubs to the 1929 pennant, and now found himself facing his
old team with a title at stake. This
series featured a record 13 Hall of Fame players and was the first where both
teams wore numbers on the back of their uniforms. The Yankees dominated in the batter’s box and
on the mound, with Ruth, Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri each hitting two home runs,
while Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez won Games 1 & 2. The Yankees outscored the Cubs37-19 and
outhit them 45-37 to win their fourth World Series title, and 12th World Series
game in a row. Hall-of-Famers in the
series included for the Yankees manager Joe McCarthy, outfielders Babe Ruth
& Earle Combs, catcher Bill Dickey, second baseman Tony Lazzeri, shortstop
Joe Sewell, and pitchers Lefty Gomez, Herb Pennock, & Red Ruffing; and for
the Cubs manager Rogers Hornsby, outfielder Kiki Kuyler, pitcher Burleigh
Grimes and catcher Gabby Hartnett.
