Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game
of the Day for Thursday 5/31
New York Mets 3, New York Yankees 1
Mets pitcher Dillon Gee went into Thursday’s start
with an ERA above five and unbelievably he probably pitched the game of his
life considering his awful start to the season.
Gee struck out 12 Yankee batters in seven plus innings, throwing just 88
pitches, while allowing just four hits and one run as the Mets completed a
four-game sweep of the Yankees. Offensively
Marlon Byrd hit a mammoth home run in the second inning off the upper deck façade
in left field and John Buck singled home an insurance run in the eighth as the
Mets have now won five games in a row and the Yankees have lost five in a row.
Rest
of the day’s scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win: 7 The
Pittsburgh Pirates walked off winners against the Detroit Tigers in the 14h
inning when Russell Martin singled in the winning run.
A.L.
MVP Watch: David
Ortiz, DH, Boston Red Sox. Ortiz went
1-2 with a homer, two runs scored and two walks on Thursday and is on pace to
hit .336 with 27 HRs and 105 RBI.
N.L.
MVP Watch: Carlos
Gonzalez, OF, Colorado Rockies. Gonzalez
went 2-3 on Thursday with two walks, three stolen bases, and two runs scored,
and is on pace to hit .308 with 40 HRs, 105 RBI, 137 runs scored and 37 stolen
bases.
News
& Notes: The
game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals ended at 3:14am
due to a lengthy rain delay in the ninth inning.
The Dodgers placed OF Matt Kemp in the 15-day DL
with a hamstring injury.
The Yankees will sign former outfielder Hideki
Matsui to a one-day contract so that he may retire as a New York Yankee.
