Cleveland Romps Boston in Francona's Return

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Yesterday’s Games 5/23:

Cleveland 12  Boston 3
The Indians hammered Boston in Terry Francona’s return to Fenway where he managed them to two World Series titles as Mark Reynolds and Drew Stubbs each had three RBI and Carlos Santana scored three times in the road win.

Pittsburgh 4  Chicago Cubs 2
Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and the Pirates completed the sweep of Chicago and have won 11 of their last 13 games.

Toronto 12  Baltimore 6
Edwin Edcarnacion hit a grand slam and J.P Arencibia homered and had three hits as Toronto spoiled the major league debut of top pitching prospect Kevin Gausman who allowed four runs in five innings.

Detroit 7  Minnesota 6
Miguel Cabrera hit another home run (14) and Prince Fielder singled home the winning run in the eighth after Cabrera was intentionally walked as the Tigers held on to beat the Twins in Detroit.

Los Angeles Angels Kansas City
The Angels pounded four home runs (Trout, Pujols, Trumbo, Iannetta) and helped Joe Blanton (1-7) notch his first win of the season as they took the first game of four in Kansas City.

A.L. MVP Watch:   Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Detroit Tigers (5th mention).  Cabrera went 2-3 on Thursday with his 14th home run, three more RBI (55), two runs scored and two walks.  He’s on pace to hit .391 with 50 HRs and 198 RBI.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Andrew McCutchen, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates.  McCutchen went 3-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases on Thursday and is on pace to hit .290 with 20 HRs, 96 RBI and 41 stolen bases.

History:  1912 World Series
Winner – Boston Red Sox 4-3-1 against the New York Giants
Boston won their second title in franchise history (and the Giants lost their second in a row), and first as the Red Sox, in a dramatic 8-game series with the Giants that featured four games decided by one run, one extra inning game (Game 8), and one tie (Game 6 was called due to darkness).  The Giants were actually three outs away from winning the Series in the tenth inning, but Fred Snodgrass dropped a fly ball in centerfield that opened the door for two Boston runs, the final coming on a sacrifice fly by Larry Gardner to win the game and the World Series.  The Giants actually outscored the Red Sox 31-25 and outhit them 74-60.  Hall-of-Famers in the series included for Boston pitcher Tris Speaker and outfielder Harry Hooper; and for the Giants manager John McGraw, and pitchers Christy Mathewson & Rube Marquad.

News & Notes:  A vendor at Minute Maid Park in Houston was fired after a fan filmed him taking a tray of snow cones into the bathroom stall and placing it on the floor while he did his business.  The employee was fired after the fan showed the tape to his supervisor.  Note to self…don’t eat the snow cones in Houston.

Trivia - Today’s Question:  Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912.  What tragic event occurred just five days earlier, on April 15?

Yesterday’s Question: Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack managed the team longer than any other manager has ever managed any team or teams?  How many years did he manage?
Answer:  50 years

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:  Over/Under 20 total runs scored by both the Miami Marlins (vs. White Sox) and Houston Astros (vs. Oakland) in their games Friday - Sunday.

Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 2 RBI by Miguel Cabrera tonight.
Result: Over.  Cabrera had 3 RBI.
