History: 1912 World Series
Winner
– Boston Red Sox 4-3-1 against the New York Giants
Boston won their
second title in franchise history (and the Giants lost their second in a row),
and first as the Red Sox, in a dramatic 8-game series with the Giants that
featured four games decided by one run, one extra inning game (Game 8), and one
tie (Game 6 was called due to darkness).
The Giants were actually three outs away from winning the Series in the
tenth inning, but Fred Snodgrass dropped a fly ball in centerfield that opened
the door for two Boston runs, the final coming on a sacrifice fly by Larry Gardner
to win the game and the World Series. The
Giants actually outscored the Red Sox 31-25 and outhit them 74-60. Hall-of-Famers in the series included for
Boston pitcher Tris Speaker and outfielder Harry Hooper; and for the Giants
manager John McGraw, and pitchers Christy Mathewson & Rube Marquad.
