Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Game
of the Day for Monday 5/27
Los Angeles Dodgers 8, Los Angeles Angels 7
The
Dodgers have been in a scoring funk all season, ranking in the bottom of the
majors in runs scored and RBI, and on Monday they put it all together, staging
a five-run comeback against their freeway American League rival Angels, who play their home
games about 30 minutes southeast down Highway 5. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez had four hits
and four runs scored, and Jerry Hairston Jr.’s RBI single in the seventh put
the Dodgers ahead for good.
Rest
of the day’s scores:
Consecutive days with a walk-off win: 4 Both Houston and Arizona walked-off winners on Monday.
A.L.
MVP Watch: Kelly
Johnson, 2B/OF, Tampa Bay. Johnson went
4-5 on Monday with a pair of three-run home runs, and is on pace to hit 32 HRs
and drive in 103 RBI.
N.L.
MVP Watch: Carlos
Gomez, OF, Milwaukee. Gomez went 2-3 on
Monday with two home runs (9,10), two RBI, and two runs scored, and is on pace
to hit .330 with 33 HRs, 82 RBI and 29 stolen bases.
Fantasy
Spin: Evan Gattis,
C/OF, Atlanta Braves. The rookie Gattis
went 3-4 on Tuesday with his eleventh home run and is on pace to hit 36 HRs and
drive in 102 RBI. He’s an interesting fantasy
catcher in that while he leads all rookies in extra-base hits (22), home runs
(11), RBI (31) and slugging percentage (.612), while ranking second in on-base
plus slugging percentage (.931), but he doesn’t see regular playing time
despite this. He started in place of the
injured all-star catcher Brian McCann for the first five weeks of the season and
his hot bat has forced manager Freddie Gonzalez to move him to the outfield
just to get him in the lineup. But he
often gets pulled for a defensive replacement later in games as he’s not an
outfielder, and the loss of at-bats should eventually affect his stats. His power isn’t too surprising as he did hit
22 HRs in the minors in 2011, but fantasy owners should add him immediately and
ride the hot hand until it fizzles.
Gattis could easily win N.L. Rookie of the Year honors if he keeps up
this pace, but don’t expect 30+ home runs and 100+ RBI as his reduced at-bats
will limit his production and the fact that he’s never played in more than 88
games suggests he might not hold up physically in 150+ games.
News
& Notes: San
Diego catcher Yasmani Grandal will be reinstated today after serving a 50-game
suspension for a positive testosterone test last season.
History
– 1914 World Series
Winner: Boston
Braves 4-0 against the Philadelphia Athletics
The
Braves shocking sweep of the Athletics ranks arguably as one of the greatest
World Series upsets of all time. They
were in last place on July 18th and managed to streak to a 10 ½ game
lead of the American League at season’s end.
It was the first four-game sweep in World Series history, and the first
title in franchise history. Their
mediocre pitching staff outpitched the historic Athletics rotation in all four
games, while catcher Hank Gowdy hit .545 (6-11) with five extra-base hits and five
walks, and was the difference maker in Games 1 & 3. For the series, the Braves outscored the A’s
16-6 and outhit them 33-22.
Hall-of-Famers playing in the series included for Boston second baseman
Johnny Evers and shortstop Rabbit Maranville; and for Oakland Manager Connie
Mack, third baseman Frank Baker, second baseman Eddie Collins, and pitchers Chief
Bender, Eddie Plank & Herb Pennock.
