A.L.
MVP Watch: Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Detroit. Cabrera went 8-12 over the weekend with three
HRs, six RBI and five runs scored and is on pace to hit .382 with 42 HRs, 181
RBI and 131 runs scored.
N.L.
MVP Watch: Paul
Goldschmidt, 1B, Arizona. Goldschmidt
went 6-13 over the weekend with two home runs, four RBI, and four runs scored
and is on pace to hit .333 with 44 HRs and 128 RBI.
Record
Watch: The Miami
Marlins are averaging 2.71 runs scored per game, which equates to 439 total
runs in the season. Only one team since
1972 (the 1981 Blue Jays) have averaged less runs, but they should eclipse all-time record for least runs scored which is
380 set by in 1909 by the Washington Senators
History: 1908 World Series
Winner
– Chicago Cubs 4-1 against the Detroit Tigers
In a rematch of
the 1907 World Series won by the Cubs, Chicago won would win again for their
second consecutive World Series title, besting Ty Cobb and the Tigers in five
games. This would be the last World
Series the Cubs would win, a drought that’s lasted 105 years and counting. The series was rather anticlimactic with the
Cubs outhitting the Tigers 48-33 and outscoring them 24-15, while the Tigers committed
nine errors. Hall-of-Famers in the
series included for Chicago pitcher Mordecai “three-Finger” Brown, first baseman
Frank Chance, second baseman Johnny Evers, and shortstop and manager Joe Tinker,
and for Detroit outfielders Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford.
Trivia
- Today’s Question: Ty Cobb played 23
seasons in major league baseball and hit over .300 for his last 22, a record
that surely won’t be broken. How many
MVP awards did Cobb win in his career?
Yesterday’s
Question: What exactly is Tommy John surgery and why is it
named this?
Answer: It’s a surgical graft
procedure in which the ulnar collateral ligament from the medial elbow is
replaced with a tendon from somewhere else in the body. Major League pitcher Tommy John was the first
to undergo the procedure and it became wildly, thus it’s named after him.
Vegas
Bet: Lastly, here’s
an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book: Over/Under 2 runs scored by the Miami Marlins tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Weekend Bet: Over/Under 5 runs allowed by Angel’s starter Joe Blanton (0-7, 6.47 ERA) against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
Result: Under. Blanton allowed four runs in just over four
innings.
