Cabrera Homers Again and Tigers Win After Two Rain Delays

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Yesterday’s Games 5/22

Detroit 11 Cleveland 7
Justin Verlander didn’t have his best stuff but it doesn’t matter when Miguel Cabrera is hitting.  Verlander allowed five runs in five innings and came back in to pitch the rest of the fifth after a 62-minute rain delay, and Cabrera homered (no.13) for the fifth time in three games as the Tigers survived another 48-minute rain delay in the eighth to beat the Indians in Cleveland.

Los Angeles Angels 7  Seattle 1
The Angels won their fourth straight game with a tough outing from pitcher C.J. Wilson who struck out 10 in eight innings, and two hits and two RBI from Alberto Callapso to beat Seattle.

Toronto 4  Tampa Bay 3 (10 innings)
Jose Bautista had four hits including two home runs and drove in all four Toronto runs counting the walk-off game winning single in the tenth to lift the Blue Jays at home.

Baltimore 6  New York Yankees 3
The Orioles tagged Yankee starter Hiroki Kuroda for three first inning runs supplied by home runs from Nick Markakis and Chris Davis (his A.L. leading 14th), and three more from Matt Weiter’s three-run shot in the third to beat New York in the rubber game of the series.

Pittsburgh  1 Chicago Cubs 0
Francisco Liriano continued to be more than impressive after making his season debut less than two weeks ago as he blanked the Cubs through seven allowing just two hits while striking out nine for his third win with no losses.

Atlanta 5  Minnesota 4
The Evan Gattis legend gets bigger each day as this time he hit a grand slam for this tenth home run to lead the Braves to their sixth straight game and a sweep of the home series with Minnesota.
 Philadelphia 7  Miami 3
Cliff Lee pitched a complete-game three-hitter against and Delmon Young homered for the second straight game as the Phillies won the series 2-1.

Cincinnati Reds 7  New York Mets 4
Starting pitchers Matt Latos (4-0) and Matt Harvey (5-0) each gave up four runs and didn’t factor in the decision as the game Reds scored three runs in the ninth to break the tie and sweep the Mets in New York.

Texas 3  Oakland 1
Adrian Beltre and David Murphy homered in a three-run Rangers first inning and rookie Ross Wolf won his first big league game and Texas salvaged the final game of the series with Oakland.

Boston 6  Chicago White Sox 2
Clay Buchholz improved to 7-0 with seven solid innings and David Ortiz had two hits and two RBI as Boston avoided the series sweep in Chicago.

Los Angeles Dodgers  9 Milwaukee 2
Carl Crawford and Scott Van Slyke drove in two runs apiece and Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched into the eighth to help L.A. win the road series in Milwaukee.

Astros 3  Kansas City 1
J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer off Kansas City ace James Shields and the Houston bullpen pitched effectively to close out the game and give Astros the rare series win.

Colorado 4  Arizona 1
Carlos Gonzalez tripled and homered to help the Rockies win the rubber game of the series.

St. Louis 5  San Diego 3
St. Louis rookie Tyler Lyons threw seven masterful innings allowing just one run on four hits, and a balanced offense led the Cardinals to the series win in San Diego.

Washington 2 San Francisco Giants 1 (10 innings)
Bryce Harper hit his 12th home run, made a game-saving catch in the eighth, and doubled and scored leading off the tenth to lift the Nationals to their only win in the four game series.

A.L. MVP Watch:  Jose Bautista, OF, Toronto.  Bautista went 4-4 on Wednesday with two home runs and four RBI, and is on pace to hit 38 HRs with 95 RBI and 98 walks.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Joey Votto, 1B, Cincinnati.  Votto went 2-3 on Wednesday with a homer, two RBI, and two walks and is on pace to hit .359 with 24 HRs, 75 RBI and 141 walks.

History:  1911 World Series
Winner – Philadelphia Athletics 4-2 against the New York Giants
Philadelphia won their second straight World Series led by Frank “Home Run” Baker who hit .375 and in the series earned his nickname with two big homers, one that won Game 3 and the other tied Game 4 in the ninth as the A’s went on that game and the series.  The A’s outscored the Giants 27-13 and won three games by two or less runs before blowing out the Giants 13-2 in Game 6.  Hall-of-Famers in the series include for Philadelphia Manager Connie Mack, third baseman Frank Baker, pitcher Chief Bender, second baseman Eddie Collins, and pitcher Eddie Plank; and for the Giants Manager John McGraw and pitchers Christy Mathewson & Rube Marquad.

News & Notes:  St. Louis pitcher Jaime Garcia will have season-ending surgery this week.

Trivia -  Today’s Question: Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack managed the team longer than any other manager has ever managed any team or teams?  How many years did he manage?

Yesterday’s Question: Three players hit for the cycle in 2012, but only one of them did it twice.  Who was that player?
Answer:  Aaron Hill, 2B for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book: Over/Under 2 RBI by Miguel Cabrera tonight.

Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 12 strikeouts combined from Justin Verlander and Ubaldo Jiminez in the Detroit-Cleveland game tonight.
Result: Push.  Verlander struck out 9 while Jiminez fanned 3.
