Here’s what’s happening in baseball:
Yesterday’s Games 5/14
Washington
6 Los Angeles Dodgers 2
Jordan Zimmerman improved to 7-1 and Ryan Zimmerman
drove in three runs as the Nationals won in Los Angeles. Bryce Harper had to leave the game in the
fifth inning after running full speed into the outfield wall chasing a fly ball
and received 11 stitches in his chin for his efforts. He didn’t catch the ball and will be
re-evaluated today, but could miss a few games this week with shoulder issues
as well.
Cleveland 1 New York Yankees 0 Game 1
Justin
Masterson was brilliant at home for the Indians as he pitched a four-hit complete
game shutout for his sixth win, and Jason Kipnis hit a first inning home run to give him all the
support he needed.
New York Yankees 7 Cleveland 0
Game 2
Vidal Nuno made his first career start a memorable
won by pitching five shutout innings for his first win, and Lyle Overbay
knocked in a pair of runs with an RBI double as the Yankees split the
doubleheader.
Milwaukee
5 Pittsburgh 1
Marco Estrada pitched seven strong innings and Norichika
Aoki went 3-5 with two stolen bases as the Brewers capitalized on three
Pittsburgh errors to win on the road.
St.
Louis 6 New York Mets 3
Lance Lynn labored through six innings, throwing 124
pitches before leaving the game tied at three, but the Cardinals scored three
runs in the bottom of the seventh to get Lynn his sixth win, capped by Matt
Holiday’s sixth home run.
Detroit
7 Houston 2
Andy Dirks highlighted a six-run fourth inning with
his first career grand slam, and Victor Martinez hit a two run shot earlier in
the inning as The Tigers won at home. Anibal
Sanchez struck out eight in seven innings for his fourth win.
Chicago
Cubs 9 Colorado 1
Travis Wood registered his eight quality start by
allowing just two hits in seven innings for his fourth win, and Alfonso Soriano
homered for the fourth time this year as the Cubs extended their winning streak
to three games.
Minnesota
10 Chicago White Sox 3
Twins rookie Aaron Hicks hit two solo home runs and
robbed another at home, and Justin Morneau had three hits and four RBI to lead
Minnesota.
Atlanta
10 Arizona 1
In his first return to Arizona scone being traded in
the offseason, Braves outfielder Justin Upton put on a show his former home
crowd by going 4-5 at the plate, including hitting his major league best 13th
home run Atlanta routed the Diamondbacks.
Paul Goldschmidt hit his 10th home run for Arizona in the
loss.
Kansas
City 11 Los Angeles Angels 4
Billy Butler busted out of a hitting slump in a big
way with five hits and five RBI, and Lorenzo Cain had two hits and three RBI as
the Royals rocked Angel’s starter Joe Blanton for seven runs in less than five
innings.
Oakland
5 Texas 1
Yoenis Cespedes and Brandon Moss hit back-to-back
home runs in the third inning and A.J. Griffin struck out eight Texas hitters
in seven innings as the A’s beat their division rival at home.
A.L. MVP Watch: Justin Morneau, 1B, Minnesota. Morneau went 3-5 on Monday with four RBI and
is on pace to hit .295 with 133 RBI.
N.L. MVP Watch: Justin Upton, OF, Atlanta (7th
mention). Upton went 4-5 on Monday with
his major league best 13th home run, and is on pace to hit 56 HRs
and drive in 100 runs.
Record Watch: Jordan Zimmerman (7-1) in on pace
to win 30 games for the Nationals, which would fall short of the record 41 set
in 1904, but would come close to the more modern record of 31 wins set by Denny
McClain of Detroit in 1968.
History - 1904 World Series
There was no 1904 World Series
even though the Boston Americans repeated as American League champions and the
New York Giants won the National League pennant. The Giants refused to acknowledge the newly
formed American League and referred to them as the inferior league who didn’t
deserve a chance at a title. There was
no governing body of baseball in 1904 and the two pennant winners would decide
on a World Series format at season’s end, but the Giants were well within their
right to refuse to play as the rules were ambiguously defined. This would all change in 1905 and baseball wouldn’t
miss another World Series until the strike shortened 1994 season.
News
& Notes: The
Chicago Cubs signed first baseman Adam Rizzo to a 7-year, $41 million dollar
contract.
The Mets signed outfielder Rick Ankiel on Monday
after he was released by Houston, and he went 0-3 at the plate in his first
start for New York and just missed catching a bloop single because as he said
after the game his glove didn’t arrive in time for the 6:00pm start and he had
to use pitcher Jonathan Niese’s glove in the outfield. This begs several questions including why
wouldn’t Ankiel travel with his glove if it was that important to him, why was
he using a pitcher’s glove in the outfield, and most importantly, if he was
released by Houston, probably the worst team in baseball, how good could he be
for the Mets to sign him?
Trivia – Today’s Question
– Who is the Mets all-time leader in pitching wins?
Yesterday’s Question – Where did the
Boston Red Sox play their home games before Fenway Park opened in 1912?
Answer – Huntington Avenue American League Base Ball Grounds, now on
the site of Northeastern University.
