Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Yesterday
5/6 Games
Boston
6 Minnesota 5
(11 innings)
Clay Buchholz struck out nine in six innings, but
gave up four earned runs before leaving the game, only to see his Red Sox teammates
come back and tie the game in the seventh on a Stephen Drew home run, take the
lead for good in the eighth on a Dustin Pedroia home run, give it right back in
the top of the ninth when Brian Dozier homered off Joel Hanrahan to tie the
game at 5, and finally win it in the eleventh on Stephen Drew’s walk-off
RBI double. With the Rangers loss, the Ted Sox reclaimed the best record in baseball at 21-11.
Atlanta
7 Cincinnati 4
Andrelton Simmons went 3-4 with two home runs and
four RBI, Paul Maholm labored through 5 2/3 innings for his fourth win, and
Craig Kimbrel picked up his tenth save as the Braves won in Cincinnati.
Chicago
Cubs 9
Texas 2
Scott Feldman pitched seven shutout innings
against his former team and Anthony Rizzo went 3-4 with a homer and four RBI as
the Cubs defeated the Rangers in Chicago
Toronto
8
Tampa Bay 7
The Rays scored seven times in the third inning off
Mark Buehrle behind a grand slam by Evan Longoria
and a two-run shot by Luke Scott to take a 7-0 lead, but couldn’t hold it as
the Blue Jays scored eight runs culminating with a go-ahead, two-run home run
by J.P. Arencibia in the top of the ninth to give Toronto the dramatic come
from behind win.
Chicago White Sox 2 Kansas City 1
The White Sox withstood eight shutout innings by
Royals ace James Shields and capitalized in the ninth off closer Greg Holland
when Alexie Ramirez tied the game with a bases loaded single, then won it in
the tenth on a Jordan Danks walk-off home run.
Cleveland
7 Oakland 3
The Indians belted four home runs, two by Asdrubal
Cabrera, as they provided plenty of support for Ubaldo Jiminez who struck out a
season-high eight batters in route to his second win of the season.
Arizona 9 Los Angeles Dodgers 2
Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Ross hit back-to-back home
runs in the fourth and starting pitcher Trevor Cahill allowed two runs in six
innings while driving in two runs with a triple in the first as the
Diamondbacks hammered the Dodgers in Arizona.
Philadelphia
6
San Francisco 2
Cliff Lee struck out six in eight strong innings and
Michael Young had two hits, including a two-run double as the Phillies beat
Madison Bumgarner and the Giants in San Francisco.
San
Diego 5
Miami 0
Andrew Cashner pitched shutout ball into the eighth,
Chase Headley had a pair of hits and a RBI, and Jedd Gyorko homered as the
Padres blanked the Marlins in San Diego.
News
& Notes: The Phillies placed pitcher Roy Halladay
on the 15-day DL with right shoulder discomfort.
White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd was shut down for the
season and will undergo surgery on his pitching arm.
Fantasy
Spin: Andrew Cashner,
SP, San Diego Padres.
Cashner
was the centerpiece of the trade with the Chicago Cubs two years ago that sent
Anthony Rizzo to the windy city, and the Padres have finally stretched his arm
out to become a starter, with Monday’s start only his third of the year. He has huge strikeout potential as evidenced
by his 35 K’s in eight just under 35 innings pitched as a starter, but does
struggle with his command at times and his 95 m.p.h. fastball at times. Monday’s eight innings were the longest of
his career, and he definitely warrants a pickup in all leagues as his ceiling
is extremely high and he appears to be a fixture now in the Padres starting
rotation.
A.L.
MVP Watch: Evan
Longoria, 3B, Tampa Bay Rays. Longoria
went 2-5 on Tuesday with a grand slam, and is on pace to hit .305, with 36 HRs
and 99 RBI.
N.L.
MVP Watch: Anthony
Rizzo, 1B, Chicago Cubs. Rizzo went 3-4
on Monday with 4 RBI and his ninth HR.
He’s currently on pace to hit 45 HRs, drive in 126 runs, and even steal
20 bases.
History
– Toronto Blue Jays Team History
The Blue Jays
joined the American League in 1978 as an expansion franchise along with the
Seattle Mariners, and wouldn’t field a winning team until 1983. In total the Blue Jays have won five American
East titles, the first coming in 1985, where they would lose the A.L.C.S. in
seven games to the eventual World Series champion Kansas City Royals. Success would soon follow as they made the
playoffs in 1989 & 1991, eventually losing before reaching the World
Series. 1992 was a dream season for
Toronto as they won the division title, beat the favored Oakland Athletics in
the A.L.C.S., and defeated the Atlanta Braves in six games for their first ever
World Series title, becoming the first team outside of the United States to win
the World Series. Remarkably they would
repeat as champions in 1993 by beating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games,
with the series ending on a Joe Carter walk-off three-run home run in the
bottom of the ninth inning. The success
was short lived however, and Toronto has failed to make the playoffs ever since.
Trivia

Question – Who holds the Blue Jays

Yesterday’s

home runs by a Tampa Bay Rays player?

Pena, who hit 46 HRs in 2007.
