History - 1903 World Series, Boston
5-3 over Pittsburgh
The 1903 World Series was the first played in modern
baseball and featured the Boston Americans (eventually becoming the Red Sox) of
the American League against the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League, in a
best-of-nine series. Boston won the series five games to three, winning
the last four for their first World Series win. Hall-of-Famers in the series
included pitcher Cy Young and third baseman Jimmy Collins for Boston, and
shortstop Honus Wagner and outfielder Fred Clarke for the Pirates. Cy
Young went 28-9 this year and won two games in the series, and Boston had two
more 20-game winners on their pitching staff as they beat the favored Pirates
who limped into the World Series riddled with injuries.
