Weekend of Wild Walk-Offs Continue

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Game of the Weekend:

Saturday – San Francisco 6, Colorado 5 (10)
Tied at four apiece after nine innings, Colorado scored once in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 lead, only to lose in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the inning.  Giants’ shortstop Brandon Crawford walked to open the inning, was sacrificed to second, and Angel Pagan came to the plate as the winning run.  Pagan hit a deep fly ball that caromed off the bottom of the right field wall of the spacious AT&T Park in San Francisco, bounced over outfielder Michael Cuddyer’s head, and Pagan raced all the way around to score a game-winning inside-the-park two-run home run as the Giants walked off winners in a thrilling finish. The last major leaguer to hit an inside-the-park home run that ended a game was Rey Sanchez for Tampa Bay on June 11, 2004 - also in a 10-inning victory over Colorado.

A.L. Player of the Week:  Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels.  Trout hit .461 (12-26) with 2 home runs, 2 triples, 7 RBI and 4 stolen bases and is on pace to hit .301 with 32 HRs, 116 RBI, 126 runs and 38 stolen bases.

N.L. Player of the Week: Jason Castro, C, Houston Astros.  Castro hit .579 (11-19) with 3 home runs and 5 RBI and is on pace to hit a career-high 19 HRs.

A.L. MVP Watch:  Chris Davis (sixth mention), OF/1B, Baltimore Orioles.  Davis hit .480 with four more home runs last week, raising his ML-best total to 16, and putting him on pace to hit .336 with 52 HRs and 152 RBI.

N.L. MVP Watch: Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Colorado Rockies.  Gonzalez hit .296 last week with three home runs, and is on pace to hit .300 with 43 HRs. 108 RBI and 30 stolen bases.

Fantasy Spin:  Jason Castro, C, Houston Astros.  Castro nabbed my N.L. Player of the Week honors after batting .579, but don’t rush out to grab him anytime soon.  His manager plans to get him more at-bats to keep him healthier and keep his bat in the lineup, but he’s never had more than 87 at-bats in his three-year career, and he’s a career .247 hitter.  While Castro probably led all catchers in fantasy points last week in only 19 at-bats, all six games were at home and Saturday he belted two home runs to boost his scoring.  I don’t anticipate that even with his extra at-bats he’ll be a useful fantasy starter, so I’d look elsewhere if you need a catcher.  Besides, Houston doesn’t score many runs and any Astros player at this point is only slightly relevant.

Record Watch:  Miguel Cabrera knocked in 10 more runs last week and is on pace to drive in 192, which would fall one short of the all-time record of 191.

News & Notes:  Arizona starting pitcher Ian Kennedy will miss his scheduled start this week after cutting his right index finger doing dishes.

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver is set to return to the mound this week after missing almost eight weeks with a broken elbow on his non-throwing arm.

History – 1913 World Series
Winner: Philadelphia Athletics 4-3 against the New York Giants.
In winning the National League pennant, the Giants became the first team to win three consecutive pennants, and the second and last team to lose three straight World Series.  These two teams would eventually move west to Oakland and San Francisco and in 1989 would meet again in a crosstown rival World Series.  In 1913, the A’s dominated the World Series, outscoring the Giants 23-15 and out-hitting them 46-33.  Hall-of-Famers in the series included Oakland Manager Connie Mack, third baseman Frank Baker, pitcher Chief Bender, second baseman Eddie Collins, and pitchers Eddie Plank & Herb Pennock (did not play); and for the Giants manager John McGraw, and pitchers Christy Mathewson & Rube Marquad.

Trivia - Today’s Question:  Frank “Home Run” Baker of the Philadelphia Athletics led all of baseball in home runs in 1913.  How many did he hit?

Yesterday’s Question: Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912.  What tragic event occurred just five days earlier, on April 15?
Answer:  The S.S. Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean about 1000 miles northeast of New York City.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:Over/Under 12 strikeouts by Yu Darvish tonight against Arizona.

Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 20 total runs scored by both the Miami Marlins (vs. White Sox) and Houston Astros (vs. Oakland) in their games Friday - Sunday.
Result: Push.  The Astros (13) and Marlins (7) combined to score exactly 20 runs.
