Trout Hits For Cycle as Angels Rout Mariners

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Yesterday’s Games 5/21

Los Angeles Angels 12  Seattle 0
The Angles pounded the Mariners in Los Angeles as Mike Trout became the youngest A.L. player to hit for the cycle as he drove in five runs, and Josh Hamilton busted out of his season long slump with a home run and triple to make an easy winner out of Jerome Williams (3-1) who tossed eight shutout innings.

Detroit 5 Cleveland 1
Max Scherzer improved to 6-0 by tossing eight solid innings while striking out seven, and Miguel Cabrera hit his 12th home run as the Tigers ended Cleveland’s five-game winning streak.

Tampa Bay 4 Toronto 3
Kelly Johnson and Desmond Jennings each homered for Tampa Bay and Alex Cobb pitched into the seventh for his fifth win.

Baltimore 3 New York Yankees 2 (10 innings)
Chris Dickerson hit two solo home runs for Baltimore and Nate McClouth hit another in the tenth as the Orioles walked off extra inning winners at home.

Pittsburgh 5  Chicago Cubs 4
Travis Snider hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the fifth as the Pirates spoiled Matt Garza’s season debut in Pittsburgh to make a winner out of Wandy Rodriguez (5-2).

Atlanta 5  Minnesota 4
Atlanta catcher Evan Gattis hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in the ninth (his second pinch-hit homer in four days) to tie the game and Freddie Freeman won it with a bloop single in the tenth as the Braves walked off winners.

 Philadelphia 7  Miami 3
Ryan Howard had three hits and three RBI for the Phillies and Delmon Young homered as they beat the Marlins in Miami.

Cincinnati Reds 4  New York Mets 0
Mike Leake pitched seven shutout innings and Devon Mesoraco hit  a two-run home run as the Reds blanked the Mets in New York.

Oakland 1  Texas 0
Dan Straily struck out five in seven innings for his second win and Yoenis Cespedes hit his ninth home run as the A’s beat Yu Darvish and the Rangers in Texas.

Chicago White Sox 3  Boston 1
Jose Quintana took a no-hitter into the seventh and Jeff Keppinger hit a two-run home run as the White Sox held off Boston in Chicago.

Milwaukee 5  Los Angeles Dodgers 2
Jonathan LuCroy had three hits and Carlos Gomez hit a go-ahead two-run double in the fifth as the Brewers beat the Dodgers at home.

Kansas City 7  Astros 3
Alex Gordon went 3-4 and the Royals scored four times in the eighth for the comeback win in Houston.

Colorado 5  Arizona 4
The Rockies blew a late four-run lead but were bailed out in the tenth when catcher Wilin Rosario singled in the winning run as Colorado walked off winners at home.

St. Louis 10  San Diego 2
Daniel Descalso hit his first career grand slam and Adam Wainwright (6-3) held San Diego to one run in just over seven innings as the Cardinals won on the road.

San Francisco Giants 4  Washington 2
Matt Cain and Stephen Strasburg each struck out seven in seven innings but didn’t factor into the decision as Gregor Blanco’s triple tied the game in the ninth for San Francisco and Pablo Sandoval’s two-run home run in the tenth won it.

A.L. MVP Watch:  Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels (3rd mention).  Trout had four hits on Tuesday; a single, double, triple and home run as he hit for the cycle and drove in five runs, and is on pace to hit 32 HRs, drive in 122 runs, and steal 32 bases.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Colorado.  Tulowitzki went 2-4 on Tuesday including his ninth home run and is on pace to hit .337 with 33 HRs and 139 RBI.

History:  1910 World Series
Winner – Philadelphia Athletics 4-1 against the Chicago Cubs
The Athletics outscored the Cubs 35-15 and out-hit them 57-37 in this lopsided series that was almost a sweep as the Cubs rallied in the ninth inning of Game 4 before losing Game 5 7-2.  Jack Coombs won three games for A’s helping owner Connie Mack win his first World Series title and the first professional title for the city of Philadelphia.  Athletics second baseman Jimmy Archer became the first player ever to appear in a World Series for both an American League and a National League team.  He was the Detroit Tigers second baseman in 1907.  Hall-of Famers in the series included for the A’s Manager Connie Mack, third baseman Frank Baker, pitcher Chief Bender, second baseman Eddie Collins, and pitcher Eddie Plank (did not play); and for the Cubs, pitcher Mordecai Brown, first baseman/manager Frank Chance, second baseman Johnny Evers (did not play), and Manager Joe Tinker.

Trivia -  Today’s Question:  Three players hit for the cycle in 2012, but only one of them did it twice.  Who was that player?

Yesterday’s Question: The Pittsburgh Pirates became the first team to broadcast one of their games on the radio.  What year did this occur?
Answer:  1921

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:
Over/Under 3 runs scored today by the Cubs at home against Pittsburgh.
Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 6 strikeouts by Stephen Strasburg tonight in San Francisco.
Result: Over.  Strasburg struck out 7.
