shutout innings.

innings while striking out seven, and Miguel Cabrera hit his 12th home
run as the Tigers ended Cleveland’s five-game winning streak.

Kelly Johnson and Desmond Jennings each homered for
Tampa Bay and Alex Cobb pitched into the seventh for his fifth win.
Baltimore
3 New York Yankees 2 (10 innings)
Chris Dickerson hit two solo home runs for Baltimore
and Nate McClouth hit another in the tenth as the Orioles walked off extra
inning winners at home.
Pittsburgh
5 Chicago Cubs 4
Travis Snider hit a pinch-hit grand slam in the
fifth as the Pirates spoiled Matt Garza’s season debut in Pittsburgh to make a
winner out of Wandy Rodriguez (5-2).
Atlanta

Atlanta catcher Evan Gattis hit a pinch-hit two-run
home run in the ninth (his second pinch-hit homer in four days) to tie the game
and Freddie Freeman won it with a bloop single in the tenth as the Braves
walked off winners.

Ryan Howard had three hits and three RBI for the
Phillies and Delmon Young homered as they beat the Marlins in Miami.
Cincinnati
Reds 4 New York Mets 0
Mike Leake pitched seven shutout innings and Devon
Mesoraco hit a two-run home run as the
Reds blanked the Mets in New York.
Oakland
1 Texas 0
Dan Straily struck out five in seven innings for his
second win and Yoenis Cespedes hit his ninth home run as the A’s beat Yu
Darvish and the Rangers in Texas.
Chicago
White Sox 3 Boston 1
Jose Quintana took a no-hitter into the seventh and
Jeff Keppinger hit a two-run home run as the White Sox held off Boston in
Chicago.
Milwaukee
5 Los Angeles Dodgers 2
Jonathan LuCroy had three hits and Carlos Gomez hit
a go-ahead two-run double in the fifth as the Brewers beat the Dodgers at home.
Kansas
City 7 Astros 3
Alex Gordon went 3-4 and the Royals scored four times
in the eighth for the comeback win in Houston.
Colorado
5 Arizona 4
The Rockies blew a late four-run lead but were
bailed out in the tenth when catcher Wilin Rosario singled in the winning run
as Colorado walked off winners at home.

Daniel Descalso hit his first career grand slam and
Adam Wainwright (6-3) held San Diego to one run in just over seven innings as
the Cardinals won on the road.
San
Francisco Giants 4 Washington 2
Matt Cain and Stephen Strasburg each struck out
seven in seven innings but didn’t factor into the decision as Gregor Blanco’s
triple tied the game in the ninth for San Francisco and Pablo Sandoval’s
two-run home run in the tenth won it.

a single, double, triple and home run as he hit for the cycle and drove in five

– Philadelphia Athletics 4-1 against the Chicago Cubs
The Athletics
outscored the Cubs 35-15 and out-hit them 57-37 in this lopsided series that
was almost a sweep as the Cubs rallied in the ninth inning of Game 4 before
losing Game 5 7-2. Jack Coombs won three
games for A’s helping owner Connie Mack win his first World Series title and
the first professional title for the city of Philadelphia. Athletics second baseman Jimmy Archer became
the first player ever to appear in a World Series for both an American League
and a National League team. He was the Detroit
Tigers second baseman in 1907. Hall-of
Famers in the series included for the A’s Manager Connie Mack, third baseman
Frank Baker, pitcher Chief Bender, second baseman Eddie Collins, and pitcher
Eddie Plank (did not play); and for the Cubs, pitcher Mordecai Brown, first
baseman/manager Frank Chance, second baseman Johnny Evers (did not play), and
Manager Joe Tinker.
