Mets Win in Ninth on Baxter's Single, Again

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Yesterday May 9th games:

New York Mets 3  Pittsburgh 2
Mike Baxter singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and the Mets opened the four-game home stand with the Pirates with an exciting win.  Baxter’s bottom of the tenth inning single on Tuesday also won the game for the Mets.

Arizona Philadelphia 1
Patrick Corbin improved to 5-0 as he limited the Phillies to just four hits into the seventh as he lowered his ERA to 1.75 and helped the Diamondbacks beat Cole Hamels at home.

Minnesota 5  Boston 3
The Twins benefitted from John Lackey’s throwing error in the sixth and erupted for four runs, two by Twins rookie Oswaldo Arcia on his third home run and the Red Sox lost the last three games and series after winning the first game.

Cleveland 9  Oakland 2
The Indians won convincingly and completed the series sweep of the A’s as Jason Kipnis, Nick Swisher & Mark Reynolds each homered and Scott Kazmir struck out ten in six innings.

Tampa Bay 5  Toronto 4 (10 innings)
Luke Scott walked with the bases loaded allowing the winning run to score in the bottom of the tenth, and David Price rebounded from some bad starts by striking out eight in eight innings.

New York Yankees 3  Colorado 1
The Yankees won the rubber match in Colorado despite more than a two hour rain delay in the middle of the fourth, as C.C. Sabathia and five relievers allowed just four hits and Robinson Cano his ninth home run.

Atlanta 6  San Francisco 3
Brian McCann, in jus this third game of the season, homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Braves who won in San Francisco.

Kansas City 6  Baltimore 2
The Royals avoided a three-game sweep by the Orioles as Alex Gordon & Eric Hosmer homered in a four-run fourth inning, helping Jeremy Guthrie improve to 5-0.

Washington 5  Detroit 4
The Nationals led 5-0 after the second inning and hung on for the win as Ryan Zimmerman went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Los Angeles Angels 6  Houston 5
The Angels snapped a four-game losing streak as Mark Trumbo tied the game in the eighth with a double and Alberto Calypso plated the winning run with a sacrifice fly.

A.L. MVP Watch:  Mark Reynolds, 1B, Cleveland.  Mark went 2-3 Thursday with his 11th homer run and is on pace to hit 57 HRs and knock in 151 runs.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Buster Posey, C, San Francisco.  Buster went 2-4 on Thursday with his 5th HR and is on pace to hit .297 with 23 HRs and 101 RBI, almost identical numbers to his 2012 N.L. MVP season.

History – New York Yankees Team History
The Yankees are one of the eight charter members of the American League in 1901, known then as the Baltimore Orioles before they moved to New York and took the name Highlanders until 1913, when they officially became the Yankees.  They are the most successful franchise in pro sports history, having won 40 American League pennants and 27 World Series championships, with their first coming in 1923, the same year the old Yankee Stadium opened.  In that building, affectionately known as the House that Babe Ruth built, led by such Hall-of –Famers as the Babe, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle & Yogi Berra, they would go on to win World Series titles in 1927, 1928, 1932,  1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1976, 1977, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000.  The old Yankee Stadium was destroyed and replaced by a new Yankee Stadium in 2009, and once again they won the World Series in the same year their new stadium opened.  I toured both the old stadium before it was demolished and the new stadium just months after they won the 2009 World Series, and pictures from the Yankees dugouts can be seen below along with a panoramic of the new stadium.

Trivia – Today’s Question –  Who is the Yankees all-time leader in stolen bases?

Yesterday’s Question – What two Red Sox pitchers are tied with the franchise record for most wins in a Boston uniform?
Answer – Cy Young and Roger Clemens with 192 wins.  Young from
From 1901-1908 and Clemens from 1984-1996.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make in Las Vegas casinos:

Over/Under 2 wins by the Mets over the weekend vs. Pittsburgh.
Yesterday’s Bet: Over/Under 4 runs allowed by Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels.
Result: Under.  Hamels allowed 2 runs.
