History
– New York Yankees Team History
The Yankees are
one of the eight charter members of the American League in 1901, known then as
the Baltimore Orioles before they moved to New York and took the name Highlanders
until 1913, when they officially became the Yankees. They are the most successful franchise in pro
sports history, having won 40 American League pennants and 27 World Series
championships, with their first coming in 1923, the same year the old Yankee
Stadium opened. In that building,
affectionately known as the House that Babe Ruth built, led by such Hall-of –Famers
as the Babe, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle & Yogi Berra, they
would go on to win World Series titles in 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1947,
1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1976, 1977, 1996, 1998,
1999 and 2000. The old Yankee Stadium
was destroyed and replaced by a new Yankee Stadium in 2009, and once again they
won the World Series in the same year their new stadium opened. I toured both the old stadium before it was
demolished and the new stadium just months after they won the 2009 World
Series, and pictures from the Yankees dugouts can be seen below along with a panoramic of the new stadium.
