Yankees Win Late After King Felix Exits

Here’s what’s happening in baseball:

Yesterday’s Games 5/15

New York Yankees 4  Seattle 3
The Yankees patiently waited for Felix Hernandez to leave the game after dominating them for six innings, and then scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, two Robby Cano’s double, to steal a win at home.  C.C. Sabathia fanned ten in the no-decision.

Los Angeles Dodgers 2  Washington 0
Clayton Kershaw came within one out of a complete game shutout at home as he struck out eleven Nationals in rout to his fourth win.

Pittsburgh 4  Milwaukee 3 (12 innings)
Pittsburgh catcher Russell Martin tied the game in the eight with a double down the line, and all-star centerfielder Andrew McCutchen hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 12th for the wild home win.

St. Louis 10  New York Mets 4
Carlos Beltran went 3-5 with four RBI and John Gast won his major league debut with six solid innings as the Cardinals disposed of the Mets again.

Detroit 6  Houston 2
Doug Fister struck out seven in seven innings and Miguel Cabrera hit his eighth home run as the Tigers beat up on the Astros yet again.

Colorado 9  Chicago Cubs 4
Carlos Gonzalez personally saw to it that the Rockies snap out of their losing ways by going 5-5 at the plate with two home runs and five RBI, and Jeff  Francis allowed just one run in six innings for his second win.

Chicago White Sox 4  Minnesota 2
Jake Peavy put together another quality start with seven strong innings to notch his fifth win for the White Sox, while Dayan Viciedo and Adam Dunn hit consecutive home runs in the second to start the scoring.

Arizona 2  Atlanta 0
Patrick Corbin improved to 6-0 with seven shutout innings and Didi Gregorius hit a two-run single in the third for all the scoring needed as Arizona won at home.

Los Angeles Angels 6  Kansas City 2
The Angels blasted four home runs, one each by Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, Mike Trout and Howie Kendrick, as their offense came to life in Anaheim and they ended Jeremy Guthrie’s 18-game winning streak for the Royals.

Texas 6  Oakland 5 (10 innings)
Adrian Beltre tied the game with a solo home run in the tenth for the Rangers, and two batters later Mitch Moreland connected for his second homer off the game, and third in his last two games, for the extra inning road win.

Tampa Bay 5  Boston 3
Matt Moore remained undefeated at 7-0 with six strong innings, and the Rays scored five times in the fourth off John Lackey for the home win.

Philadelphia 6  Cleveland 2
John Mayberry went 3-5 with three RBI and Domonic Brown hit his seventh home run as the Phillies beat the Indians at home.

Toronto 10  San Francisco 6
R.A. Dickey struck out ten in six innings and Melky Cabrera had four hits against his old team as the Blue Jays pounded Giant’s starter Barry Zito for 12 hits in the win.

Cincinnati  6 Miami 2
Homer Bailey was spectacular for the Reds as he continued his up & down season.  Bailey pitched a complete game shutout while striking out ten Marlins for his second win, and offensively Joey Votto has three hits and Brandon Phillips drove in two runs, pushing his total to an N.L. best 33.
San Diego 3  Baltimore 2
Baltimore closer Jim Johnson imploded trying to protect a one-run lead in the ninth as he allowed four hits and two runs to scored, something he hasn’t done in 35 chances.

A.L. MVP Watch:  Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels.  Trout went 1-2 on Tuesday with two walks and a stolen base, and hit seventh home run.  He’s on pace to hit 29 HRs, drive in 112 runs and steal 29 bases.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Carlos Gonzalez, OF, Colorado.  Gonzalez went 5-5 on Tuesday with two home runs and is on pace to hit .319 with 39 HRs and 129 RBI, with 21 stolen bases.

History - 1905 World Series
Winner: New York Giants 4-1 against the Philadelphia Athletics.
The Giants agreed to appear in the 1905 World Series one year after refusing to acknowledge the newly formed American League, and easily handled the Philadelphia Athletics in an agreed upon best of seven game series, with all four wins by shutout.  Giant’s ace Christy Mathewson won three of the four games.  Mathewson would go on to win 373 games and a hall of fame career.  This was the first World Series to set a seven game limit, and is the only World Series where all the games were shutouts. In fact, only one reliever was used in the entire series, and unbelievably the Giants gave up zero earned runs, something that will probably never be duplicated again.  Hall of famers in this series include for the Giants: Manager John McGraw, catcher Roger Bresnahan, and pitchers Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity; and for the A’s Manager Connie Mack, pitchers Chief Bender, Eddie Plank and Rube Waddle (did not play).

News & Notes:  Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke comes off the DL today to start against the Nationals after nearly five weeks rehabbing a broken left collarbone suffered in a fight with Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin.

Yankees all-star outfielder Curtis Granderson came off the DL Tuesday and hit cleanup, going 1-3 with a walk.

Trivia – Today’s Question –  The Baseball Hall of Fame inducted five players in the inaugural 1936 ceremony.  Name them.

Yesterday’s Question – Who is the Mets all-time leader in pitching wins?
Answer – Tom Seaver, with 198 wins from 1967 -1977, and 1983.
