Game
of the Day for Tuesday 5/28
New York Mets 2, New York Yankees 1
The Mets spoiled Mariano Rivera’s last game at Citi
Field by scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a walk-off
victory in front of a home crowd that waited two hours for the game to start after
it was delayed by rain. Matt Harvey
started the game for the Mets and was brilliant, allowing just one run on six
hits, while striking out ten in eight innings, but once again settled for the
no-decision. Yankee starter Hiroki
Kuorda was equally brilliant, throwing seven innings of shutout ball before
handing it over to the bullpen. Down 1-0
in the ninth, Daniel Murphy doubled off Rivera, David Wright then singled him
home to tie the game, reached second on Brett Gardner’s throwing error, and scored
the winning run when Lucas Duda singled to center. It was the first time in Rivera’s 19-year
Hall-of-Fame career that he failed to record an out, and it was his first blown
save of the season.

History
– 1915 World Series
Winner: Boston
Braves 4-0 against the Philadelphia Athletics
For the second straight year, a Boston team would
beat a Philadelphia team in the World Series (in 1914 the Boston Braves beat
the Philadelphia Athletics). It was a
very competitive series in that all five games were decided by one run, and the
Phillies would win the first game in Philadelphia before losing the next four,
and wouldn’t win another World Series game until 1980. The Red Sox won games 2, 3 &4 with an
identical 2-1 score, and would finish the Phillies in Game 5, 5-4. The total composite box score has the Red Sox
outscoring the Phillies just 12-10, but they outhit them 42-27. Even though Fenway Park opened this year,
Boston would play their home games in the series at Braves Field to take
advantage of the larger seating capacity and thus larger gate revenue. A very young Boston pitcher named Babe Ruth who
won 18 games in 1915 and led the team with four home runs, would only pinch-hit
once in the series as Boston’s pitching was so strong. Hall-of Famers in the series included for
Boston pitchers Harry Hooper and Herb Pennock (did not play), outfielder Tris
Speaker, and of course Ruth; and for Philadelphia pitchers Grover Cleveland
Alexander and Eppa Rixey, and shortstop Dave Bancroft.
