History
2004 World Series – Boston Red Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals
The 2004 World Series was the 100th played in major league baseball history and the third that featured the Boston Red Sox against the St. Louis Cardinals.  St. Louis beat Boston in 1946 and 1967.  The Red Sox made their first appearance in the series since losing in 1986, and hadn’t won since 1918 (the second longest drought in MLB history), and Cardinals their first since losing in 1987.
Boston had home field advantage, and the teams combined for the most runs scored in an opening game with 20 as the Red Sox won 11-9.  David Ortiz hit a three-run home run in a four-run first inning, and infielder Mark Bellhorn lined a two-run shot off the right field foul pole in the eighth to break a 9-9 tie.
Game 2 belonged to Boston pitcher Curt Schilling who allowed just one run in six strong innings as the Red Sox won 6-2.  Boston held a 2-0 series lead with the next three games if necessary to be played in St. Louis.
In Game 3, Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez hit a first inning home run to start the scoring, and pitcher Pedro Martinez pitched six masterful innings, shutting out the Cardinals on just three hits, as Boston won 4-1 to take a 3-0 series lead.
In Game 4, Boston outfielder Johnny Damon hit a leadoff home run to give the Red Sox the lead in their fourth straight game, and they scored twice more in the third for all the scoring they would need.  St. Louis failed to score off Derek Lowe who became the third straight starting pitcher the Cardinals couldn’t score a run off.  Boston won the game 3-0 for their first World Series title since in 86 years and became the fourth team to win without trailing in any of the games.
Boston Wins 4-0
For the series, Boston outscored St. Louis 24-12 and outhit them 39-24.  No current Hall of Famers played in the series.
Tomorrow:  2005 World Series – Chicago White Sox vs. Houston Astros
