History
2009 World Series – New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies
The 2009 World Series marked the fifth time a New York team met a Philadelphia team in the Series, with New York last winning in 1950 The Phillies were looking to repeat as champions, and the Yankees returned after losing their last two Series appearances in 2003 and 2001.  The Series was nicknamed the “Turnpike Series” for the New Jersey Turnpike which connects the two cities, and MLB dubbed it the “Liberty Series,” based on the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and the Statue of Liberty in New York.
New York had home field advantage, and the Series opened in brand new Yankee Stadium, but Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee silenced the Bronx crowd with a complete game six-hitter while second baseman Chase Utley belted two home runs as the Phillies won easily 6-1.
In Game 2, old Yankee nemesis from his Boston days Pedro Martinez took the mound for Philadelphia to chorus of boos, and he surrendered solo home runs to Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui before leaving to a 2-1 deficit.  The Yankees added another run in the seventh and won 4-2 behind seven strong innings from starter A.J. Burnett.
The Series moved to Philadelphia for Game 3 and it was a slugfest from the beginning.  Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth hit his first of two home runs in the first inning, but New York stormed back with homers from Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher, and Hideki Matsui to hold on for an 8-5 win.
In Game 4, the Yankees held a 4-3 lead in the eighth when Joba Chamberlain gave up a game-tying solo home run to pinch hitter Pedro Feliz, but in the top of the ninth New York scored three runs with two outs on Alex Rodriguez’s double and Jorge Posada’s single to take a 7-4 lead.  Closer Mariano Rivera nailed down his second save and New York held a 3-1 Series lead.
In Game 5, Cliff Lee once again held the Yankees in check throughout the game until he ran out of gas in the eighth, but the Phillies scored early and often as Chase Utley smacked two more home runs to tie Reggie Jackson for most Series home runs with five, and Philadelphia won 8-6 and trailed the Series 3-2 with it heading north to New York.
Game 6 in New York was a wild scene as the Phillies once again started Pedro Martinez, and he was heckled all night as New York took advantage of his declining skills.  Hideki Matsui tagged him for a two-run home run in the second and a two-run single in the fourth, and Martinez was done after four innings.  New York added three more runs in the fifth including two on a double from Matsui who pushed his RBI total for the night to six that tied a World Series record held by Yankee second baseman Bobby Richardson back in 1960.  New York won the game 7-3 and Andy Pettitte added to his MLB record with his 18th win as the Yankees celebrated for their 27th World Series title in their brand new stadium.
New York Wins 4-2.
For the series, New York outscored Philadelphia 32-27 and outhit them 49-44.
Tomorrow:  2010 World Series – Texas Rangers vs. San Francisco Giants
