History
2005 World
Series – Chicago White Sox vs. Houston Astros
The
2005 World Series featured two teams hoping to overturn decades of disappointment,
as Chicago reached the series for the first time since 1959 and hadn’t won
since way back in 1917. Houston made
their first World Series appearance in the 44-year history of the franchise,
and somebody’s fortunes would be changed forever.
Chicago had
home field advantage, and they won Game 1 easily 6-1 behind the pitching of
Jose Contreras and home runs from Jermaine Dye and Joe Crede. Houston starter Roger Clemens had to leave in
the second inning with a sore hamstring, marking his shortest World Series
start ever.
In Game 2,
White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko belted the 18th grand slam home run in
World Series history in the seventh inning to give Chicago a 6-4 lead, but
closer Bobby Jenks blew the lead in the ninth, only to have outfielder Scott
Podsednik save the day with a pinch-hit, walk-off solo home run in the bottom
of the ninth to lift Chicago to a 7-6 win and a 2-0 series lead.
The series
moved south to Houston for Game 3 where the first ever World Series game was
played in the state of Texas. Tied at
five after nine innings, the game lasted until the 14th when former Astro Geoff
Blum hit a solo home run with two outs, and Chicago added another insurance run
on a pair of singles and walks. The
White Sox won the game 7-5, and when it finally ended 5 hours and 41 minutes
later, it tied or broke several World Series records that included: longest game
ever played in time (5 hrs 41 mins) most pitchers used in a game (17), most
pitches thrown (482), most batters walked (21), most players used in a game
(43), and most men left on base (30).
Chicago held a 3-0 series lead with Game 4 the next night in Houston.
Game 4 was a
pitcher’s duel long promised as White Sox starter Freddy Garcia and Houston starter
Brandon Backe exchanged zeroes through seven innings before Jermaine Dye drove
in the game’s only run with an eighth inning RBI single off Houston closer Brad
Lidge, and Chicago hung on to win the game 1-0 and sweep the series 4-0 for
their first World Series title since 1917 and just the second in franchise
history.
Chicago Wins
4-0
For the series, Chicago outscored Houston 22-14 and outhit
them 44-29. No current Hall of Famers
played in the series.
