Here’s your baseball
briefing for Monday, October 28, 2013.
Weekend
Game 3 World Series (best of seven)
RESULT | WIN | LOSS | SAVE |
at St. Louis 5, Boston 4 | Rosenthal (1-0) | Workman (0-1) |
In one of the wildest endings to a World Series game ever,
St. Louis scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth (after blowing a
two-run lead in the eighth) when ailing first baseman Allen Craig was awarded
home plate after interference from Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks. Craig hit a pinch hit double in the inning
that moved teammate Yadier Molina to third base, and with one out, John Jay hit
a ground ball to Dustin Pedroia who gunned out Molina at home, but catcher
Jarrod Saltamacchia fired the ball to third base to stop Craig from advancing. The ball got past a diving Middlebrooks, and
as he lay on the ground he impeded Craig’s progress to home plate, causing
several umpires to call interference that allowed Craig to score the winning
run. It was only the second time in
World Series history that the winning run was scored on an error.
Game 4 World Series
RESULT | WIN | LOSS | SAVE |
Boston 4, at St. Louis 2 | Doubront (1-0) | Lynn (0-1) | Uehara (1) |
Johnny Gomes hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning
that gave Boston the lead for good that propelled Boston to the win and a tie
in the Series, ensuring the World Series will be decided in Boston. With two outs in the ninth and Carlos Beltran
up, Boston closer Koji Uehara picked off St. Louis pinch runner Kolten Wong at
first base to end the game. Two
unbelievable endings in two consecutive games made this series a special one,
and we’ll have to see what Game 5 tonight has in store.
