Baseball Hall of Fame Inducts Three Posthumously

Here’s your morning baseball briefing:

On Sunday the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted three pioneers who have been dead for more than seven decades.  It marked the first time since 1996 that no living player was inducted.  Jacob Ruppert Jr., Hank O' Day, and James "Deacon" White were all honored yesterday with a ceremony in Cooperstown attended by families, friends and baseball fans.  O' Day and White were players before the turn of the century, and Ruppert owned the Yankees from 1915 until his death in 1939.

History – 1953 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 2.
The Yankees and Dodgers met for the fourth time in seven years to determine a champion, with the Yankees winning in 1947, 1949 & 1952.  They were gunning for their record fifth straight title while the Dodgers were still looking for their first, having also lost in 1916 & 1920 as the Brooklyn Robbins.
The Yankees had home field advantage this time and they won game one 9-5 behind home runs from Yogi Berra and Joe Collins.  Billy Martin and Mickey Mantle homered in Game 2 as the Yankees won 4-2, setting the stage for Ebbets Field in Brooklyn for the next three games.   Brooklyn pitcher Carl Erskine shined in Game 3 as he set a new World Series record with 14 strikeouts as the Dodgers won 3-2.  Brooklyn evened the series with a 7-3 win in Game 4, but the Yankees rebounded in Game 5 with an 11-7 win behind home runs from Mantle, Martin, Gene Woodling and Gil McDougald.
The series shifted back to the Bronx for Game 6 where Brooklyn outfielder Duke Snider tied the game at three with a two-run ninth inning home run, but the Yankees rallied in the bottom of the ninth as Billy Martin singled home Hank Bauer with the series-winning run for his record 12th hit of the World Series.  Martin saved the 1952 World Series with his diving catch of Jackie Robinson’s popup, and now he won this series with a single up the middle.  The gritty second baseman now had a permanent place in Yankee history as the New York won their fifth consecutive World Series and 16th overall.
Hall of Famers in this series included for New York: manager Casey Stengel, first baseman Johnny Mize, catcher Yogi Berra, outfielder Mickey Mantle, shortstop Phil Rizzuto, and pitcher Whitey Ford; and for the Dodgers: shortstop Pee Wee Reese, catcher Roy Campanella, outfielder Duke Snider, and second baseman Jackie Robinson.
Tomorrow: 1954 World Series – Cleveland Indians vs. New York Giants.

Trivia - Today’s Question:   Billy Martin went on to manage the Yankees five different times, and only once did he finish the season as a World Champion.  What year was that?

Yesterday’s Question: What two teams have played the most World Series against each other?
Answer: The New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers, who met eleven times in a World Series, with the Yankees winning eight of them.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book: Over/Under 5 runs allowed in the Angels-Rangers game today featuringpitchers Jeff Weaver and Matt Garza.
Yesterday’s Bet:  13 runs scored by both teams in the Mets-Nationals doubleheader on Friday.
Result:  Over.  They combined to score 14 runs with the Mets winning 11-0 and losing 2-1.
