Here’s your
morning baseball briefing:
Game of the Weekend for Friday June 28 – Sunday June 30,
2013:
Sunday - Pittsburgh
Pirates 2, Milwaukee Brewers 1 (14 innings)
Russell
Martin singled home the game-winning run in the 14th inning on Sunday to lift
the Pirates to their ninth straight victory and baseball’s best 51st win this
season. Pittsburgh tied the game at one
apiece in the eighth on Andrew McCutchen’s RBI single after waiting out nearly
a four hour rain delay. The Pirates
bullpen combined for 11 scoreless innings to keep them in the game, and when it
finally more than six hours later the Pirates were in first place in the N.L.
Central at the half way point of the season and had the best record in
baseball. They haven’t reached the
playoffs in 21 years and they are known to fade in the second half, but
something tells me this year is different.
Rest of
the Weekend Scores:
Joe
DiMaggio Watch (56-game hitting streak): Michael Cuddyer, OF/1B for the Colorado
Rockies, had a hit in all three weekend games and has hit safely in 27 straight games, 29 short of Joe D’s
major league record.
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later that immediately ends the game): 3 There
were no walk-off wins on Thursday. On Friday night the Seattle Mariners walked
off winners, on Saturday the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa
Bay Rays all walked off winners, and on Sunday it was the Pittsburgh Pirates
and Boston Red Sox who walked off winners.

to hit 75, which would break the all-time record of 67 set by Earl Webb in
1930.

home runs, ten RBI, eight walks and two stolen bases, and is on pace to hit
.295 with 24 HRs, 104 RBI and 38 stolen bases.
N.L. MVP
Watch: Buster Posey, C, San Francisco Giants. Posey hit .500 last week (11-22) with four
home runs, and is on pace to hit .323 with 24 HRs and 97 RBI.
A.L. Cy
Young Watch: Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians. Masterson went 1-1 last week with a complete
game shutout and 15 total strikeouts in his two starts. He’s on pace to go 20-12 with 256 strikeouts.
N.L. Cy

on Saturday as he held the Oakland A’s to just one run while walking two. He’s on pace to go 22-10 with 230 strikeouts
and an amazing 24 walks.
History –
1938 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees swept the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 0.
The Yankees swept the Cubs in four straight just as they did
in 1932 as they won a record third consecutive World Series, and seventh overall. The Yankees won the first two games in
Chicago behind Hall of Fame pitchers Red Ruffing & Lefty Gomez and the
hitting of Frank Crosetti and Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio who each homered the 6-2
Game 2 victory. The Yankees won Games 3
& 4 at Yankee Stadium by the scores of 5-2 and 8-3 as Joe Gordon, Bill
Dickey and Tommy Heinrich each homered and Red Ruffing went the distance for
his second win in four games. For the
series the Yankees outscored the Cubs 22-9 and outhit them 37-33. Hall-of Famers in the series included for the
Yankees: manager Joe McCarthy, outfielder Joe DiMaggio, first baseman Lou
Gehrig, catcher Bill Dickey, second baseman Joe Gordon, and pitchers Lefty
Gomez and Red Ruffing; and for the Cubs: manager/second baseman Tony Lazzeri,
pitcher Dizzy Dean, catcher Gabby Hartnett and second baseman Billy Hermann.
Trivia -
Today’s Question: Joe DiMaggio holds the major league record with his 56-game
hitting streak in 1941, but who holds the second longest hitting streak in MLB
history?
Friday’s
Question: Before the Yankees won two straight
World Series titles in 1936 & 1937, what was the last team to win
consecutive World Series?
Answer: The
Philadelphia Athletics won consecutive World Series in 1929 & 1930 (and in
1911 & 1912).
