Toronto Masters Cleveland

Here’s your morning baseball briefing:

Game of the Day for Wednesday July 10, 2013:

Toronto Blue Jays 5, Cleveland Indians 4
Cleveland was led by all-star pitcher Justin Masterson who took a two-hit shutout into the seventh, but he gave up two runs to fall behind 2-1.  The Indians tied the game at two in the bottom of the eighth on Michael Brantley’s RBI single, but in the top of the ninth Toronto loaded the bases for shortstop Munenori Kawasaki who broke an 0-18 slump with a two-run single to break the game open.  The Jays would add another run on the same play when Cleveland outfielder Michael Bourne booted the ball allowing Emil Bonifacio to score from first base, a run that would prove very costly.  Cleveland now trailed 5-2 in their last at-bat, and plated two runs on an RBI single and an error, but Toronto reliever Steve Delabar got Brantley to pop up to end the game for his first career save.

History – 1946 World Series
Winner: The St. Louis Cardinals beat Boston Red Sox 4 games to 3.
Baseball in 1946 was fun again as World War II had ended the previous August and many players had returned to their teams.  The Cardinals tied for the National League pennant with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and baseball played its’ first ever playoff series that wasn’t a World Series.  The Cardinals beat the Dodgers in two straight (best of three) to capture their fourth pennant in the last five years.  The World Series with Boston would follow the 2-3-2 format that is still used today.  The teams split the first six games with St. Louis pitcher Harry Brecheen winning two games and Boston first baseman Rudy York belting two home runs.  Game 7 lived up to its’ dramatic billing as the Cardinals started Brecheen again and held a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth when Dom DiMaggio tied the game with an two-run double, but was pulled for a pinch runner so he wouldn’t be in centerfield for the bottom of the eighth when Harry Walker doubled to left center that scored Enos Slaughter all the way from first as the Cardinals took a 4-3 lead.  Playing for DiMaggio in centerfield was Leon Culberson who fumbled the ball momentarily, allowing Slaughter a few extra seconds to race home.  The play is referred to in history as the Mad Dash, as nobody thought Slaughter could score from first.  St. Louis hung on in the ninth to win their sixth World Series title.  In the series the Cardinals outscored the Red Sox 28-20 and outhit them 60-56.  Hall of famers in the series included for St. Louis: outfielder Enos Slaughter, first baseman Stan Musial, and second baseman Red Schoendienst; and for Boston: manager Joe Cronin, outfielder Ted Williams, and second baseman Bobby Doerr.
Tomorrow: 1947 World Series – New York Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers

Trivia - Today’s Question:  What year did the Toronto Blue Jays last win the American League East?

Yesterday’s Question: In what year were the Cubs six outs away from playing in their first World Series since 1945?
Answer:  2003.  The year of the Bartman incident, to be explained with the 2003 World Series history.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:  Over/Under 6 runs scored today in the White Sox – Tigers game.
Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 4 walks given up by Mets pitcher Zach Wheeler tonight in San Francisco.
Result:  Under.  Wheeler walked just 3 batters.
