History – 1945 World Series
Winner: The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 3.
In a rematch of the 1935 World Series in which the Tigers won in six games, still many of the game’s best players were finishing up service in World War II and this series was dubbed “World’s Worst Series” by Cubs historian and author Warren Brown.  The Cubs raced out two a 2-1 series lead by winning their games at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, but during Game 4 in Chicago, the famous Curse of the Billy Goat was placed on the Cubs team when a fan was asked to remove his goat from the stadium and he responded with insults and even a letter to Phillip Wrigley stating the Cubs wouldn’t win this World Series or another ever again because he insulted his goat.  Sadly, both have come true, so far.  The Cubs lost Games 4 & 5, rallied to win Game 6 with a walk-off win in the 12th inning, but lost Game 7 at home 9-3 as the Tigers scored five runs in the first inning to run away with the game.  It was the Chicago Cubs last World Series appearance, and they haven’t won a title since 1908, the longest drought for any professional sports team.  For Detroit it was their second World Series title and first since 1935.  The Tigers outscored the Cubs 32-29, but were outhit 65-54.  Hall of famers playing in the series included first baseman Hank Greenberg (who hit two HR’s) and pitcher Hal Newhouser, and for the Cubs, none.
Tomorrow: 1946 World Series – Boston Red Sox vs. the St. Louis  Cardinals.

Trivia - Today’s Question:  In what year were the Cubs six outs away from playing in their first World Series since 1945?

Monday’s Question: What player has hit the most World Series home runs?
Answer:  Mickey Mantle with 18.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:  Over/Under 4 walks given up by Mets pitcher Zach Wheeler tonight in San Francisco.
Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 4 combined runs in the Yankees-Royals game featuring starting aces James Shields and C.C. Sabathia.
Result:  Push.  They combined to give up exactly 4 runs.
