Dodgers Take Over First Place With Rout of Blue Jays

Here’s your morning baseball briefing:

Game of the Day for Monday July 22:
Los Angeles Dodgers 14, Toronto Blue Jays 5
Ordinarily this game doesn’t seem like a big deal, but in Los Angeles it’s a huge deal.  The Dodgers won their eighth consecutive road game and vaulted into first place in the N.L West for the first time this year with a season-high 14 runs.  Second baseman A.J. Ellis went 4-6 including a two-run homer, and had a career-high five RBI, and seventh hitter Skip Schumaker (right fielder) hit a three-run shot to break the game open and rout the Blue Jays in Toronto.  Making the game even cooler was Paul Stanley of the rock band KISS who threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

News & Notes:  Milwaukee Brewers all-star outfielder Ryan Braun was suspended for the rest of the regular season and playoffs by major league baseball for violating MLB’s drug policy.  He admitted to using performance enhancing drugs (PED’s) when MLB presented him with overwhelming evidence of his illegal actions.

The Chicago Cubs traded their best starting pitcher Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers for five players (no current starters), 2 pitchers, a backup third baseman, and two players to be named later.

History – 1949 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 1.
The Yankees and Dodgers met for the second time in three years in an all-New York World Series (the Yankees defeated the Dodgers in seven games in 1947) as both teams finished with identical 97-57-1 records and each won their league by exactly one game.  The Yankees were led by new manager Casey Stengel who would go on to win five consecutive World Series in his first five years with the team.  The teams split 1-0 games at Yankee Stadium as Yankee outfielder Tommy Heinrich ended Game 1 by leading off the ninth inning with a walk-off home run off Dodger starter Don Newcombe, who tied a World Series record by fanning 11 Yankees as the losing pitcher.  The teams crossed the Brooklyn Bridge where their fans cheered the Dodgers and booed the Yankees as they arrived at Ebbets Field for games 3, 4 & 5.  The Yankees won all three games as Joe Page, Eddie Lopat and Vic Rashi won their starts by the scores of 4-3, 6-4, & 10-6, and the Yankees celebrated their 12th World Series title in Brooklyn.  For the series, the Yankees outscored the Dodgers 21-14 and outhit them 37-34.  Hall of Famers in the series included for the Yankees: manager Casey Stengel, first baseman Johnny Mize, catcher Yogi Berra, outfielder Joe DiMaggio, and shortstop Phil Rizzuto; and for the Dodgers: shortstop Pee Wee Reese, catcher Roy Campanella, outfielder Duke Snider, and second baseman Jackie Robinson.
Tomorrow: 1950 World Series – New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies

Trivia - Today’s Question:  How many World Series titles has Yogi Berra won as a player?

Yesterday’s Question: What year were the most no-hitters thrown?
Answer:  Seven no-hitters were thrown by major league pitchers in the modern era in one season: 1990, 1991, & 2012.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:  Over/Under 15 combined runs in the Reds-Giants doubleheader today.
Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/under 14 combined strikeouts by Max Scherzer and Chris Sale in their head-to-head matchup tonight.
Result:  Over.  They combined for 16 strikeouts (Sale 11, Scherzer 5).
