Here’s your
morning baseball briefing:
Game of the Weekend for Friday July 5 – Sunday July 7, 2013:
Los Angeles Angels 9, Boston Red Sox 7
(11 innings)
With the
Angels trailing 7-3 going into the ninth, a miracle was needed to win
this one, and their faith was rewarded when they loaded the bases with two outs before
Albert Pujols singled in two runs, Josh Hamilton singled in
another run, and the tying run scored on a throwing error. Halleluiah, I mean unbelievable. Hamilton capped off the incredible comeback
with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eleventh to send the Angels home
winners.
Rest of
the Weekend Scores:
Consecutive
days with a walk-off win (where the home team scores the winning run in the
ninth inning or later that immediately ends the game): 6 On
Friday the New York Yankees walked-off winners, Saturday it was the St. Louis
Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels who celebrated walk-offs, and yesterday the
Chicago Cubs walked-off winners in the bottom of the 11th inning on
Dioner Navarro’s exciting sacrifice fly to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.

to hit 71, which would break the all-time record of 67 set by Earl Webb in
1930.

home run, and hit .291 last week (.368 on the season) with three homers and
eight RBI. He’s on pace to hit 52 HRs
and 167 RBI.
N.L. MVP

of homers (20 & 21) and seven RBI and is on pace to hit .309 with 39 HRS
and 137 RBI.
A.L. Cy

improve to 12-3. He’s on pace to go 22-5
with 180 strikeouts.
N.L. Cy
Young Watch: Patrick Corbin, Arizona Diamondbacks. Corbin (10-1) went 1-1 last week while
striking out 14 in 14 innings. He’s on
pace to go 18-1 with 184 strikeouts and a 2.38 ERA.
History –
1943 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to
1.
In a rematch of the 1942 World Series in which St. Louis won,
the 1943 World Series featured few stars
as most rosters were depleted due to World War II. For the Cardinals Terry Moore and Enos
Slaughter were overseas fighting and for the Yankees Joe DiMaggio, Phil Rizzuto
and Red Ruffing all were absent as they too were enlisted to fight the
war. Cardinal pitchers Howie Pollet, Max
Lanier, and Mort Cooper ranked 1–2–3 in the National League in ERA in 1943 at
1.75, 1.90 and 2.30 respectively, and with some of the best hitters off to war,
this would be a low scoring series. The
teams split the first two games and the Yankees had a 3-1 series lead heading
into game five where Bill Dickey’s two-run home run in the sixth was all the
scoring the Yankees needed as they won 2-0 for their 10th World Series title. Overall the Yankees outscored the Cardinals
17-9 and were outhit 37-35. It was
manager Joe McCarthy’s seventh and final World Series title, a record he shares
with Yankee Hall of Famer Casey Stengel, who would win his from 1949-1958. Hall of famers playing in the series included
for the Yankees: catcher Bill Dickey and second baseman Joe Gordon; and for the
Cardinals first baseman Stan Musial.
