Happy 4th
of July!
Here’s
your morning baseball briefing:
Game of
the Day for Wednesday July 3, 2013
Los Angeles Dodgers 10, Colorado Rockies 8
The Dodgers continued their winning ways in Colorado as they
belted four home runs to hold off the Rockies late. Juan Uribe, Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez
and Matt Kemp each homered, and Yasiel Puig robbed Nolan Arenado of one in the
fifth as he crashed into the padded outfield wall. Puig was removed after his next at-bat (in
which he drove in a run with a sacrifice fly) for precautionary reasons with a
bruised hip. Zach Greinke (6-2) struggled on the mound for Los Angeles but
still picked up his third straight win despite allowing five runs. Carlos Gonzalez hit his N.L. leading 23rd
home run for Colorado who has lost three in a row while the Dodgers have now
won four in a row and are now tied for second in the N.L. West, just 2.5 games
behind the division leading Diamondbacks.

History –
1941 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 1.
The Yankees captured their fifth title in six years, and
ninth overall in what was dubbed the Subway Series as it featured two New York
City teams. The two teams split the
first two games at Yankee Stadium before playing games three, four and five at
Ebbets Field where the Yankees won all three by six combined runs. In fact, all five games were decided by less
than three runs. The series turned in
game four when the Yankees, trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth, scored four
times to escape with a victory. With two
outs, Dodger catcher Mickey Owen dropped what was the third strike on Yankee
outfielder Tommy Heinrich who reached first base to extend the inning. Joe DiMaggio followed with a single and
Charlie Keller and Joe Gordon also recorded hits as the Yankees stunned the
Dodgers to score their four runs as they held on for the win. New York won game five 3-1 as Tommy Heinrich
homered in the second inning to put them ahead for good, and for the series
they outscored the Dodgers 17-11 and outhit them 41-29. Hall of famers in the series included for the
Yankees: manager Joe McCarthy, outfielder Joe DiMaggio, catcher Bill Dickey,
second baseman Joe Gordon, shortstop Phil Rizzuto, and pitcher Red Ruffing; and
for the Dodgers: manager Leo Durocher, second baseman Billy Herman, shortstop
Pee Wee Reese, and outfielder Joe Medwick.
