History
1979 World Series – Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh
The 1979 World Series was a rematch of the 1971 World Series won by Pittsburgh in seven games, and this series went the distance too, and featured high offenses and bad breaks.  Baltimore had home field advantage, and on a rainy night for Game 1, the Orioles took advantage of two Pirates’ first inning errors to score five runs, all of them they would, winning 5-4.  Game 2 was tied at two in the ninth when catcher Manny Seguillen slapped a pinch-hit RBI single into right field that plated the winning run, and Baltimore went easy in the ninth as the 3-2 loss evened the series at one apiece.
Pittsburgh hosted Game 3, and fans eager for a celebration were sent home with an 8-4 defeat when the Orioles came back from an early 3-0 deficit to win easily.  Baltimore kept on hitting in Game 4, pounding out 17 hits a 9-6 win, aided by a six-run eighth inning that gave  the Orioles a 3-1 series lead and reason for optimistic revenge.
The Pirates fought off elimination in Game 5 with a 7-1 win where all the runs were scored after the fifth inning, and the series would return to Baltimore to decide a champion with the Orioles up 3-2.
For the first six innings in Game 6 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, pitchers Jim Palmer of the Orioles and John Candelaria of the Pirates were locked in a scoreless duel, but Pittsburgh broke through with two runs in each the seventh and eighth innings and hung on to win 4-0, forcing a Game 7 just like 1971.
Like Game 6, Game 7 started slowly but finished strong, and Pittsburgh outfielder Willie Stargell took over the game, going 4-5 including a towering two-run home run in the sixth inning to propel the Pirates to a 4-1 win and their 4th World Series title in franchise history.  He was named series MVP, hitting .400 with a record seven extra-base hits, while matching Reggie Jackson's record of 25 total bases, set in 1977.
Pittsburg Wins 4-3
For the series, Pittsburgh outscored Baltimore 32-26 and outhit them 81-54.  Hall of  Famers in the series include for the winning Pirates: pitcher Blyleven and outfielder Willie Stargell; and for the Orioles: manager Earl Weaver, pitcher Jim Palmer, and first baseman Eddie Murray.
Tomorrow: 1980 World Series – Kansas City Royals vs. Philadelphia Phillies.

Trivia
Today’s Question:  1979 was the last year the Pittsburgh Pirates played in a World Series, and the franchise has struggled to win since.  With them likely to make the playoffs this year, when was the last year they were in the playoffs?

Yesterday’s Question:  What team did 1978 New York Yankee manager Bob Lemon pitch for 17 seasons, winning 20 games seven times?
Answer:  Cleveland Indians
