In the ninth, closer Mariano Rivera was one strike away from ending the
game when Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew singled home the tying run. They scored once more in the tenth on Shane
Victorino’s RBI single to seal the game.

History
1982 World
Series – Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals
Haled the “Sud Series” citing both cities’ history of beer production,
the 1982 World Series featured the power hitting Milwaukee Brewers against the
pitching strong St. Louis Cardinals.
The series started on a Tuesday night in St. Louis, and
Brewers pitched Mike Caldwell pitched a complete game 4-0 silenced the home
crowd. The Cardinals rebounded in Game 2
with a 5-4 win to tie the series, and Games 3, 4 and 5 moved to Milwaukee for
the weekend.
On Friday night, Cardinal outfielder Willie McGhee broke
open Game 3 with a three-run home run in the fifth, and St. Louis stole home
field advantage back with a 6-2 win in Game 3.
The Brewers responded in Game 4 on Saturday with a six-run seventh
inning to bust open Game 4, and tied the series at two. Crucial Game 5 was played Sunday afternoon,
and Brewers shortstop Robin Yount tied a World Series record with his second
four-hit game, and Mike Caldwell pitched another complete game as Milwaukee won
6-4 and took a 3-2 series lead.
The series shifted back to St. Louis with the Milwaukee up
3-2, and amidst two rain delays in Game 6, the Cardinals romped 13-1 as catcher
Darrell Porter and first baseman Keith Hernandez each hit two-run home runs.
Game 7 began as a pitcher’s duel, but St. Louis took the
lead for good with three runs in the sixth, and the Cardinals won 6-3 to claim
their 9th World Series title, first since 1967.
St. Louis Wins 4-3
For the series, St. Louis outscored Milwaukee and outhit
them 67-64. Hall of Famers included for
the Cardinals: manager Whitey Herzog, shortstop Ozzie Smith, and pitcher Bruce
Sutter; and for the Brewers: infielder
Paul Molitor, shortstop Robin Yount, and pitcher Don Sutton.
