History – 1978 World Series
Winner: The New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 games to 2.
The New York Yankees and Dodgers met in the 1978 World Series on the 25th anniversary of their matchup in the 1953 World Series (when the Dodgers played in Brooklyn), where the Yankees triumphed in six games.  The Yankees returned to the World Series after a very tumultuous season that had them 14 games back in the standings in mid-July.  They mounted their comeback without skipper Billy Martin, who was fired in July, and replaced mild mannered Bob Lemon.  They eventually tied Boston for the division, and beat them 5-2 at Fenway Park in a one-game playoff.  Los Angeles sought revenge for their 1977 World Series defeat at the hands of the Yankees, and this World Series would provide just as much drama.
This time around, Los Angeles had home field advantage and they quickly jumped out to a 2-0 series lead with 11-5 and 4-3 wins at home.  Game 3 in New York saw a desperate New York team start ace pitcher Ron Guidry on three days rest, and third baseman Graig Nettles played superb defense behind him, saving at least four runs on tremendous fielding plays, as Guidry completed the game, allowing eight hits and seven walks in a 5-1 win.  The Yankees tied the series at two the next night when outfielder Lou Piniella singled home outfielder Roy White in the tenth inning for a 4-3 victory, setting up a Game 5 in New York where the Yankees routed the Dodgers 12-2.
Game 6 in Los Angeles turned out to be the Bucky Dent and Brian Doyle show as the Yankees shortstop and infielder combined for five RBI in the first six innings, and outfielder Reggie Jackson capped the scoring with a monstrous two-run home run in the seventh to give New York a 7-2 lead they would keep.  Catcher Thurman Munson caught the final out of the series on a popout by Ron Cey, and New York achieved their second consecutive World Series title, winning the last four games after losing the first two.  Dent was named series MVP by hitting .417 with seven RBI.
For the series the New York outscored Los Angeles36-23 and outhit them 68-52.  Hall of Famers in the series included for NewYork: manager Bob Lemon, outfielder Reggie Jackson, and pitchers Catfish Hunter and Goose Gossage; and for the Dodgers: manager Tommy Lasorda and pitcher Don Sutton.
Tomorrow: 1979 World Series – Baltimore Orioles vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Trivia - Today’s Question:  What team did 1978 New York Yankee manager Bob Lemon pitch for 17 seasons, winning 20 games seven times?

Yesterday’s Question:  What player tied Reggie Jackson with five home runs on a World Series in 2009?
Answer:  Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley hit five home runs in a losing effort against the New York Yankees in the 2009 World Series.

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make at a Las Vegas Sports Book:  Over/Under combined 14 strikeouts by National League pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Stephen Strasburg in their games today.
Yesterday’s Bet:  Over/Under 1.5 wins by the New York Yankees in the three-game series with Baltimore in New York this weekend.
Result: Over.  The Yankees won two of the three games from Baltimore.
