History
1992 World
Series – Toronto Blue Jays vs. Atlanta Braves
The 1992 World Series featured the first Fall Classic played
outside of the United States, with Toronto hosting Games 3, 4 & 5 against
the returning National League champion Atlanta Braves.
Atlanta had home field advantage for this series, unlike in
1991 when they lost all four road games to Minnesota, and they won Game 1 by a
3-1 score behind a complete game from pitcher Tom Glavine and a three-run homer
run from Damon Berryhill. In Game 2,
Toronto stunned the home crowd with a 3-2 victory as infielder Ed Sprague hit a
two-run home run in the ninth off closer Jeff Reardon to put the Blue Jays
ahead for good. The series was tied 1-1
as it moved north of the border.
Toronto walked-off winners in Game 3 when, with the score
tied 2-2, Candy Maldonado delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the
ninth off Atlanta closer Jeff Reardon to lift the Blue Jays to a 3-2 lead, and
a 2-1 series lead.
Toronto won 2-1 in Game 4 for their third straight victory,
as Jimmy Key tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. The Blue Jays were within one win of
capturing their first World Series title.
The Braves rallied for a 7-2 victory in Game 5 behind homers
from David Justice and Lonnie Smith, and the series shifted back south to
Atlanta with Toronto holding a narrow 3-2 lead.
In Game 6, Toronto was within one out of winning the World
Series, but closer Tom Henke allowed an RBI single to Otis Nixon that tied the
game in the ninth and sent the matchup to extra innings. In the top of the eleventh, Toronto
outfielder Dave Winfield hit a hard double down the left field line that scored
two runs to give the Blue Jays a 4-2 lead.
Winfield became the oldest player to hit an extra-base hit in the World
Series, and his two RBI stood tall as Atlanta plated one in the bottom of the
eleventh before Otix Nixon grounded out to end the game and series. Toronto had won their first ever World Series
title, and first ever for a team outside of the United States, and Atlanta had just
lost two in row.
Toronto
Wins 4-2
For the series, the Braves outscored the Blue Jays 20-17,
but were outhit 45-44. Hall of Famers
included for Toronto: outfielder Dave
Winfield and second baseman Roberto Alomar; and for Atlanta: none.
