History
1989 World
Series – Oakland Athletics vs. San Francisco Giants
The 1989 World Series was known as the Bay Bridge Series as
both teams were separated by the Bay Bridge that connects the two cities. It’s also remembered for the Loma Prieta
Earthquake that struck the Bay area prior to Game 3 that caused a 10-day
disruption in the series. Oakland sought
revenge for their loss to the Dodgers in the 1988 World Series, and San
Francisco reached the Fall Classic for the first time since 1962 when they lost
to the New York Yankees.
Oakland had home field advantage in the series and quickly
jumped out to a 1-0 series lead after a 5-0 Game 1 victory, won by Dave Stewart
who pitched a complete game shutout, and aided by home runs from Dave Parker
and Walt Weiss.
The A’s continued their winning ways with a 5-1 victory in
Game 2 as catcher Terry Steinbach broke the game open with a three-run home run
in the bottom of the fourth inning, and starter Mike Moore combined with three
relievers to limit the Giants to just four hits.
Most baseball fans remember where they were for Game 3 in
San Francisco. The game was supposed to
start at 5:35 PM Pacific Time, but at 5:04, with thousands of people in the
stands and most players on the field, the bay area was rocked by a 6.9
magnitude earthquake that was caught on live television as broadcasters prepared
for the start of the game. The quake
shook the bay area for roughly 15 seconds and 42 people lost their lives as
parts of San Francisco and neighboring towns dealt with fires, bridge and
building collapses. Game 3 resumed 10
days later in San Francisco, and Oakland hit a record five home runs as they pounded
the Giants 13-7. The teams combined to
tie the World Series record with seven home runs, and Oakland held a 3-0 series
lead.
In Game 4, Oakland outfielder Ricky Henderson led off with a
home run, and the A’s quickly jumped out to an 8-0 lead, only to see it cut to
8-6, and they held on to win the game 9-6 and sweep the World Series. While the occasion called for a champagne celebration,
out of respect for the earthquake victims, the A’s chose not to celebrate their
ninth World Series title in franchise history with the bubbly.
Oakland Wins
4-0
For the series, the Athletics outscored the Giants 32-14 and
outhit them 44-28. Hall of Famers
included for Oakland: pitcher Dennis Eckersley and outfielder Rickey Henderson;
and for the Giants: none.
