Red Sox Sweep Yankees, Increase A.L. Lead to 9.5 Games

Here’s your morning baseball briefing:

News & Notes:  Baltimore Orioles’ outfielder Chris Davis became the first player to reach 50 HRs this season, and he tied the franchise record held by Brady Anderson.

A Federal Appeals Court upheld the obstruction of justice conviction of former San Francisco Giant Barry Bonds’ on Friday, and citing his 2003 grand jury testimony to be "evasive" and hindered investigators' probe into into a performance-enhancing-drug ring centered at the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, better known as BALCO.  He was sentenced to house arrest and probation.

History
1988 World Series – Oakland Athletics vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
The 1988 World Series was a rematch of the 1974 World Series, won by the A’s in five games.  These two teams were very different, and the heavily favored A’s were led offensively by Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco, both in their early 20’s, and who combined for 70 HRs.  Earlier in the season, Canseco became the first major league player to hit 40 HRs and steal 40 bases in the same season.  On the mound they fielded perhaps the best pitching team in baseball, led by Dave Stewart who won 20 games for the second straight season, followed by closer Dennis Eckersley who saved 45 games.  Los Angeles on the other hand, didn’t lead the National League in any offensive categories, but Cy Young winner Orel Hershiser anchored a formidable pitching staff.
The Dodgers had home field advantage, and Game 1 is forever remembered for the heroics of Kirk Gibson who, hobbled by injuries, hit a game-winning, two-out, pinch-hit home run off Eckersley in the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles a 6-5 win.  He hobbled around the bases pumping his fists as the crowd erupted in cheers, and the mighty A’s appeared vulnerable.
Game 2 belonged to Hershiser as he pitched a complete game three hitter (all singles) to beat Oakland 6-0, lifting Los Angeles to a 2-0 series lead as it headed north for Games 3, 4 & 5.
Game 3 in Oakland was tied at one in the ninth when Mark McGwire stepped to the plate and smashed a game-winning home run over the center field wall.  It appeared the series now might go the distance.
The Dodgers scratched and clawed their way to a 4-3 win in Game 4, and needed just one more win to clinch the World Series.  They sent their ace Orel Hershiser to the mound for Game 5, and he was masterful, striking out nine while allowing just four hits and two runs in a 5-2 Los Angeles win.  Los Angeles celebrated their sixth World Series title in franchise history and second under manager Tommy Lasorda.
Los Angeles Wins 4-1
For the series the Dodgers outscored the A’s 21-11 and outhit them 41-28.  Hall of Famers included for Los Angeles: manager Tommy Lasorda; and for Oakland: pitcher Dennis Eckersley.
Tomorrow: 1989 World Series – Oakland Athletics vs. San Francisco Giants
