History
1983 World Series – Baltimore Orioles vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Dubbed the I-95 series for the interstate connecting the two cities, the Orioles and Phillies met for the 1983 World Series in what was commissioner Bowie Kuhn’s last year.  Baltimore, led by first year manager Joe Altobelli who replaced the legendary Earl Weaver after 16 seasons, inherited a powerful offense that led the A.L. in home runs and fielded a Hall of Famers Eddie Murray at first base and second year shortstop Cal Ripken.  Philadelphia was managed by Paul Owens and had several of the Cincinnati Reds stars from their 1970’s championship runs, including Pete Rose, Tony Perez, and Joe Morgan, in addition to Cy Young winner John Denny.
Baltimore had home field advantage in the series and started lost the first game 2-1 when Phillies’ outfielder Gary Maddox homered off Oriole starter Scott MacGregor in the seventh inning to break the tie.  Mike Boddicker shut down the Phillies in Game 2 with a complete game 4-1 win, striking out six, and the series traveled up the interstate to Philadelphia for the middle games.
Game 3 featured the first time where three Cy Young winners pitched in a World Series – Steve Carlton, Jim Palmer, and Mike Flanagan.  Carlton started the game and cruised through the first five innings before Baltimore broke through with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 2-1 lead.  Palmer pitched in relief of Flanagan and the Orioles won by that score and took a 2-1 series lead.
Baltimore won Game 4 by a 5-4 score behind the pitching of Storm Davis, and the Orioles had a 3-1 series lead with Game 5 in Philadelphia the next night.
First baseman Eddie Murray was the hero of Game 5 for the Orioles, hitting two monstrous home runs in support of Scott McGregor, who pitched a complete game shutout in the 5-0 clinching win, and Baltimore won their third World Series title in franchise history.
Baltimore Wins 4-1
For the series, Baltimore outscored Philadelphia 18-9 and outhit them 35-31.  Hall of Famers included for the Orioles: first baseman Eddie Murray, shortstop Cal Ripken, and pitcher Jim Palmer; and for the Phillies: first baseman Tony Perez, second baseman Joe Morgan, third baseman Mike Schmidt, and pitcher Steve Carlton.
Tuesday: 1984 World Series – Detroit Tigers vs. San Diego Padres

Trivia
Today’s Question:  In Game 3 of the 1983 World Series, three Cy Young winners pitched in game for the first time in a World Series.  It has happened just once since.  When and who were the pitchers?

Friday’s Question:  Detroit Tiger Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg won the A.L. MVP as a first baseman in 1935 and as an outfielder in 1940.  Who is the only other played in MLB history to win the MVP award twice while playing two different primary positions?
Answer:  Robin Yount, Milwaukee Brewers.  He won in 1982 as a shortstop and again in 1989 as an outfielder.

House Bet
Today:  Over/Under 4 runs allowed by Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia in his start at Baltimore.
Friday: Over/Under 25 runs scored in the three Red-Sox Yankee games this weekend.  Result: Way Over.  They combined for 49 runs in the three games (12-8, 12-9, 4-3).
