History – Washington
Nationals, N.L. East Team History
The Nationals were founded as the
Montreal Expos in 1969 when the National League expanded. Following the franchise lineage, they have no
relation to either the Washington Senators of ’01-’61 or ’61-’71. They
became the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers respectively. The Expos were the first MLB team in Canada
and made the playoffs just once, losing the to Los Angeles Dodgers in the
N.L.C.S.. They were purchased by Major
League Baseball in 2002 after and moved to Washington D.C. for the 2005 season
and renamed the Washington Nationals.
They made the playoffs for the second time in franchise history in 2012
and were eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the N.L.D.S..
