Dodgers & Padres Brawl in San Diego

Thursday April 11th Games:
Los Angeles Dodgers 3, San Diego 2
Juan Uribe hit a go-ahead 2-run HR in the 8th inning, but this game was marred by a benches clearing brawl in the 6th inning when San Diego outfielder Carlos Quentin charged Dodger pitcher Zach Greinke after being hit by a pitch.  A wild melee ensued and Greinke left with a broken collarbone.  Several players were ejected as the jarring continued after the game with Matt Kemp going nose-to-nose with Quentin outside the locker rooms.  Expect suspensions to be handed out by MLB soon.

Detroit 11, Toronto 2
Prince Fielder and Torii Hunter combined for 7 RBI as the Tigers chased Toronto starter Josh Johnson in the second inning.  Doug Fister got the win and Detroit won the series 2—1..

San Francisco 7, Chicago Cubs 6
The Giants rallied from 5 runs down early to edge the Cubs in Chicago as Pablo Sandoval and Angel Pagan each had 2 RBI and Sergio Romo saved his MLB-leading 6th game.

New York Yankees, Cleveland (Postponed due to rain)

Washington 7, Chicago White Sox 4
Bryce Harper had 2 more hits and 2 more RBI and Ryan Zimmerman drove in 2 runs with a double after Bryce Harper was intentionally walked as the Nationals completed the 3-game sweep of the White Sox.

Baltimore 3, Boston 2
Chris Davis hit his 6th HR and Adam Jones drove in 2 runs as the Orioles took the rubber match of the 3-game series in Boston.

Oakland 8, Los Angeles Angels 1
Josh Donaldson hit a titbreaking HR in the 6th and Yoenis Cespedes also homered as the A's pounded on 16 hits and completed the 3-game sweep of the struggling Angels in Anaheim.  Oakland pitcher A.J. Griffin hurled 8 innings allowing just 1 run for the win.

Texas 4, Seattle 3
A.J. Pierzynski homered and David Murphy snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the 5th inning as the Rangers chased Seattle starter Felix Hernandez in the 7th inning.

History – Washington Nationals, N.L. East Team History
The Nationals were founded as the Montreal Expos in 1969 when the National League expanded.  Following the franchise lineage, they have no relation to either the Washington Senators of ’01-’61 or ’61-’71.   They became the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers respectively.  The Expos were the first MLB team in Canada and made the playoffs just once, losing the to Los Angeles Dodgers in the N.L.C.S..    They were purchased by Major League Baseball in 2002 after and moved to Washington D.C. for the 2005 season and renamed the Washington Nationals.  They made the playoffs for the second time in franchise history in 2012 and were eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the N.L.D.S..

Trivia – Today’s Question – The Washington Nationals are one of two teams never to have played in a World Series.  What is the other team?

Yesterday’s Question:   Who is the Miami Marlins all-time Home Run leader?
