Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Yesterday
4/24 Games:
New
York Mets 7 Los Angeles Dodgers 3
David Wright tied the game with a single in the
bottom of the ninth, and Jordany Valdespin hit a walk-off grand slam in the
tenth as the Mets stunned the Dodgers.
Matt Harvey allowed three runs in six innings, the most runs he has
allowed this year, but struck out seven and took the no decision thanks to the
incredible comeback.
Boston
6 Oakland 5
John Lester improved to 4-0 despite not having his
best stuff. He walked six and gave up
three runs in less than six innings, but David Ortiz had two hits and Stephen
Drew knocked in two runs as Boston won the series 2-1.
Tampa
Bay 3 New York Yankees 0
Alex Cobb (3-1) commanded the Yankee lineup all
night, pitching into the ninth and striking out seven, and Ben Zobrist drove in
two runs off Andy Pettitte as the Rays won the series 2-1.
Toronto
6 Baltimore 5 (11 innings)
The Blue Jays smacked four home runs and gently
walked in the winning run in the top of the 11th as Toronto avoided
the sweep in Baltimore.
St.
Louis 4 Washington 2
The Cardinals scored three runs in the first on a
double, single, walk and single off Stephen Strasburg, and the runs held up as
the Nationals ace fell to 1-4.
Pittsburgh
5 Philadelphia 3
Roy Halladay struck out eight in six innings, but
the Phillies bullpen allowed three runs, including a solo home run by Pedro
Alvarez as the Pirates took game 3 of the series.
Cincinnati
1 Chicago Cubs 0
Matt Latos pitched seven shutout innings and Todd
Frazier supplied the run with his sixth home run in the sixth as the Reds won
the series tiebreaker.
Chicago
White Sox 3 Cleveland 2
Alex Rios hit his sixth home run, a go-ahead two-run
shot in the fifth as the White Sox split the shortened two-game series.
Houston
10 Seattle 3
The Astros hit three home runs and had fourteen hits
as they won their series with Seattle for the second time this year.
Colorado
6 Atlanta 5 (12 innings)
Dexter Fowler hit a two out, bottom of the ninth,
two RBI double that tied the game, and Yorvit Torrealba won it with an RBI
single as the Rockies avoided the home sweep.
Texas
11 Los Angeles Angels 3
Nelson Cruz hit a 3-run HR in a nine-run 4th
inning, and Lance Berkman had four RBI as the Rangers made it easy for Yu
Darvish to pick up his 4th win.
Darvish struck out 11 for good measure as the Rangers took two of three
from the Angels.
San
Diego 2 Milwaukee 1
Edinson Volquez didn’t allow a run or a walk, scattering
just three hits through seven innings for his first win as the Padres stopped
the Brewers nine-game winning streak.
Arizona
3 San Francisco 2 (10 innings)
Giants’ shortstop Brandon Crawford hit a game-tying
solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, but Arizona won it in the tenth on a
sac fly to take the series 2-1.
Detroit
7 Kansas City 5
Jose Valverde returned as closer of the Tigers and
saved his first game, and Miguel Cabrera had two hits for a win in the first
game of the shortened series.
A.L.
MVP Watch: J.P. Arencibia, C, Toronto. Wednesday: 3-5, and hit his A.L. leading 8th
home run. Hit 18 HRs last years, and is
on pace for 54 and 100 RBI.
N.L.
MVP Watch:
Chase Utley, 2B, Philadelphia. Wednesday: 2-5 with his 4th home
run and 16th RBI.
Fantasy
Spin: Matt Kemp (from a game I attended in 2010)
Matt Kemp seems to have broken out from a terrible
start to the season with six hits in his last three games including his first
home run on Wednesday against Matt Harvey. He suffered through hamstring problems last
year and had offseason surgery on his left shoulder, but came to camp
ready. It might take some time for all
his power to return, and it’s a long season, but my buddy Geng needs his
production now so hopefully it’s coming.
News
& Notes – Neil Diamond is donating this week’s
sales this week of his song “Sweet Caroline” to the Boston victims. Sales are up 597% and 19,000 tracks have sold
this week.
History
– Chicago Cubs Team History
The Cubs misery,
uh history, has been well spread and documented, but they are one of the oldest
and most storied in all of baseball.
They joined the National League as a charter member in 1876 as the
Chicago White Stockings, and were later renamed the Cubs when the American
League formed in 1901. They won their
first two World Series they ever appeared in, in 1907 & 1908, and then lost
the last seven, in 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938 & 1945. It’s been 68 years since they were even in a
World Series, and they hold the longest championship drought in the history of
sports, at 105 years. It’s a great city
and baseball is much better when they’re winning. The one time I went, they couldn’t even beat
the Twins.
Trivia
– Today’s
Question – Besides Hank Greenberg, who is the only other player in Major League
history to win the M.V.P. at two different positions?
Yesterday’s
Question – Who is the Milwaukee Brewers radio
broadcaster, a position he’s held for 42 years, and along with his playing
career, has been in baseball for over 50 years?
Answer
– Bob Uecker
Vegas Bet:
Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make in Las Vegas casinos: Over/Under 7 strikeouts by Justin Verlander today vs. Kansas City
Yesterday’s Bet: Over/Under 8 strikeouts by Matt Harvey of the Mets tonight, who's averaging exactly 8 K's per game.
Result: Under. Harvey struck out 7.
