Rockies Sweep Mets Despite Snow

Here's what's happening in baseball:

Yesterday's Games (4/16)

New York Mets 8  Rockies 4  Game 1
The game was delayed 2 hours as every Denver citizen including the mayor cleared six inches of snow off the field & seats, and the Rockies survived the cold and two HRs by David Wright to double up the Mets.

New York Mets 9  Rockies 8 Game 2
The Mets squandered a six run lead and Jordan Pacheco singled home the winning run in the tenth inning as the Rockies completed the doubleheader sweep.

New York Yankees 5 Arizona 2
Robbie Cano hit a 3-run HR, Kevin Youkilis had two more hits, and Mariano Rivera saved his third game.

Boston 7 Cleveland 2
Mike Napoli doubled in 3 runs in a seven run second inning and Felix Doubront picked up his first win.

St. Louis vs. Pittsburgh
Postponed due to rain

Baltimore 5 Tampa Bay 4
Matt Weiters homered and Nick Markakis went 2-3 as the Orioles almost squandered a four run lead.

Cincinnati 0 Philadelphia 0 Postponed by rain in the ninth inning.  The game will be completed at 5:30pm today and their regularly scheduled game will begin at 7:10pm tonight.

Miami 8 Washington 2
Adeiny Hechavarria hit a 3-run HR, the first for a Marlins player at home and Alex Sanabia went to 2-0.

Atlanta 6 Kansas City 3
Ben Francisco hit two solo HRs early, and back-to-back-to-back homers by Jason Heyward, Justin Upton (his 8th) and Dan Uggla in the eight inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Braves powered their way to 11-1 and their tenth win in a row.

Chicago White Sox 5 Toronto 4
Dayan Viciedo doubled home the go ahead run in the top of the ninth inning as the Whites Sox won in Toronto.

Texas 4 Chicago Cubs 2
Adrian Beltre went 2-4 with a homer and two RBI and Derek Holland pitched 7 shutout innings for Texas.

Minnesota 8 Los Angeles Angels 6
Joe Mauer had 4 hits and 3 RBI and the Twins hammered out 15 hits as they broke open the game in the seventh inning.
Oakland 4 , Houston 3
Josh Donaldson tripled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Houston struck out 11 more times.

Detroit 6 , Seattle 2
Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in the Tigers first four runs and Doug Fister pitched 7 innings for his third win.

San Diego 8, Los Angeles Dodgers 2
2B Alexi Amarista had 4 RBI and Jason Marquis allowed just three hits into the eighth inning for the runaway win.

Record Watch:  2B Brandon Phillips is on pace for 46 HRs which would break the all-time single season record by a 2B.  Rogers Hornsby and Davey Johnson (Nationals Manager) each hit 42 in a season.

A.L. MVP Watch:   Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Detroit (and reigning MVP).  Yesterday 3-4 with a HR and 4 RBI..  He's batting .320 and slugging .460.

N.L. MVP Watch:  Justin Upton, OF, Atlanta (4th mention). Yesterday 1-4 with his ML-leading 8th home run.

Fantasy Spin:Mets 3B David Wright hit his first two home runs of the season Tuesday and his lack of power early may have some fantasy owners concerned.  As an owner myself, there's no reason to worry.  He's hitting .306 and appears locked in at the plate after beginning the year with a hot bat during the World Baseball Classic.  And a trip to Colorado can cure all power droughts.  The Mets moved their outfield fences in and Wright has power to all fields, so expect a big season from the Met's captain. He hit a career high 33 HRs in 2008 and despite the slow start, he could approach that number when the season nears end.

News & Notes: The Yankees blared Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" over the stadium PA system after the third inning Tuesday to honor Boston after Monday's tragedy.

Diamondbacks 2B Aaron Hill broke his left hand and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Brewers pitcher Yovanni Gallardo was arrested early Tuesday morning on drunk driving charges as he was three times over the limit for alcohol.

History – Chicago White Sox - Team History

The White Sox are one of the 8 charter franchises of the American League, founded in 1900 under the name Chicago White Stockings, but was shortly changed to Sox to look better in the papers.  They've appeared in 5 World Series, winning three.  They won their first World Series in 1906 over the heavily favored and crosstown rivals Chicago Cubs in 6 games.  In 1917 they were champions again when Shoeless Joe Jackson helped them defeat the New York Giants in 6 games.  They lost the 1919 World Series in 8 games against the Cincinnati Reds in a new best of 9 series format (only used one year) that was marred by the infamous Black Sox Scandal where several White Sox players conspired with gamblers to throw the series.  They returned to the World Series in 1959 where they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Sandy Koufax in 6 games.  Their last World Series appearance was in 2005 when they beat the Houston Astros in 4 games led by manager Ozzie Guillen.

Trivia – Today’s Question –Who is the White Sox all-time leader in hits?

Yesterday’s Question:   What is the record and who holds it for most times walked in a season?
Answer:   262 by Barry Bonds in 2004

Vegas Bet:  Lastly, here’s an actual bet you can make in Las Vegas casinos:  Over Under 7 strikeouts by Oakland starter Bartolo Colon today vs. the Houston Astros.

Yesterday’s Bet: Over/Under 3 inches of snow in Denver today for the Mets-Rockies doubleheader.

Result:  Over.  According to weather.com, Denver received 5.7 inches of snow since yesterday
