Here’s
what’s happening in baseball:
Yesterday
4/25 Games
Los
Angeles Dodgers 3 New York Mets 2
Andre Either hit a go-ahead single in the top of the
ninth off Scott Rice as the Dodgers took the rubber game of the series. Matt Kemp had two more hits and has 11 hits
in his last 24 at bats.
Kansas
City 8 Detroit 3
The Royals tied the game in the top of eighth after
Justin Verlander exited, and won it in the tenth with five runs, highlighted by
Alex Gordon’s grand slam as they avoided the sweep in Detroit.
Pittsburgh
6 Philadelphia 4
Gabby Sanchez homered and Garrett Jones hit a
go-ahead pinch hit double in the eighth, as the Pirates took three of four in
Philadelphia.
Boston
7 Houston 2
David Ortiz went 3-4 with a HR and two RBI, and Clay
Buchholz became the first pitcher to reach 5 wins as he struck out 10 into the
eighth, as Boston dominated the Astros at home.
New
York Yankees 5 Toronto 3
Robbie Cano hit a game-breaking 3-run HR in the
third, and Vernon Wells and Francisco Cervelli connected on long balls as well,
and the Yankees took the first game from Toronto in New York.
Chicago
Cubs 4 Miami 3
Luis Valbuena hit a tie-breaking solo home run in
the top of the ninth as the Cubs escaped Miami with a win.
Washington
8 Cincinnati 1
Gio Gonzalez was superb on the mound, holding the
Reds to just one hit in eight innings, and Bryce Harper hit his 8th
HR as the Nationals cruised past Cincinnati.
Texas
2 Minnesota 1
Ranger’s rookie Nick Tepesch shutout Minnesota into
the sixth, and Nelson Cruz & Elvis Andrus knocked in the runs as Texas won
in Minnesota.
Baltimore
10 Oakland 2
Chris Davis hit his eighth home run, Nate McClouth
reached base for times, and Adam Jones had three hits as the Orioles routed the
A’s for Jason Hammel who improved to 3-1.
Chicago
White Sox 5 Tampa Bay 2
Chris Sale struck out seven in seven innings, and
Adam Dunn homered as the White Sox improved to 11-3 when Sale pitches at home.
Seattle
6 Los Angeles Angels 0
Carlos Peguero hit a 451-foot solo home run to dead
center field in the third, his first at-bat of the season, and the third
longest home run ever hit at Safeco Field in Seattle, and rookie Brandon Maurer
pitched into the seventh as the Mariners shutout the Angels. Kyle Seager also homered for Seattle.
Arizona
3 Colorado 2
Paul Goldschmidt hit a 2-run HR in the fourth, and
Trevor Cahill labored through five innings for the win as Arizona won at home.
Record
Watch: Clay Buchholz of the Red Sox is 5-0 and on pace for
a 35-0 record, which would break a lot of records.
A.L.
MVP Watch: David Ortiz, DH, Boston. Thursday went 3-4 with a home run and 2 RBI. Hitting .550 since returning from the DL.
N.L.
MVP Watch: Bryce Harper, OF, Washington (6th
mention). Thursday went 2-3 with his 8th
home run and is batting .363.
Fantasy
Spin: David Ortiz has been raking the ball since returning
and instantly gave fantasy teams a boost.
He’s averaged 28 HRs and 86 RBI the past three years, bats close to
.300, and hits fourth in between Pedroia & Napoli. No reason why he can’t approach 30 HR and 100
RBI, especially if Jacoby Ellsbury continues to get on base ahead of him and
produces at a high level in his contract year.
Ortiz will play first base during inter league games in the National
League, gaining eligibility in leagues that only list his position as DH, so
his value won’t suffer.
