Houston Breaks Run Slump, Plates 16 vs. Seattle

Tuesday April 9th Games:

Houston 16, Seattle 9
The Astros offense finally broke out of a season-long slump as they hit 5 HRs, including two by Chris Carter and one by Jose Altuve who finished 4-6 with 4 RBI.  Mike Morse of Seattle tied Justin Upton for the major league lead in HRs when he hit his 6th in the eighth inning.
Detroit 7, Toronto 3
Miguel Cabrera went 4-4 with a HR and 4 RBI and Anibal Sanchez struck out 8 as the Tigers roughed up Blue Jays starter Brandon Morrow.

New York Yankees 4, Cleveland 1
Robinson Cano continued hit red-hot hitting in Cleveland with a 4-5 day including a HR and 5 RBI and Andy Pettitte allowed just one run in seven innings for his second win in the rout of the Indians.

Philadelphia 8, New York Mets 3
Cliff Lee pitched to within one out of a complete game and Michael Young led the offense, finishing a double shy of the cycle as the Phillies rebounded at home.

Washington 8, Chicago White Sox 7
Adam LaRoche ended an 0-15 slump by belting 2 HRs and driving in 3 runs as the Nationals hung on to win a close one at home.

Atlanta 3, Miami 2
Atlanta pitcher Kris Medlen allowed just 3 hits and 1 earned run in seven solid innings and closer Craig Kimbrel saved his fourth game as the Braves nipped the Marlins at home.

San Diego 9, Los Angeles Dodgers 3
Will Venable homered and hit a bases-loaded triple for the Padres, who rebounded from a dreadful six-game trip to win their home opener.

Texas 6, Tampa Bay 1
Ranger rookie starter Nick Tepesch held Tampa Bay to one run on four hits in seven & a third innings,  and Lance Berkman had a key two-run single among three hits to lead Texas at home and give Tepesch his first career win.

Chicago Cubs 6, Milwaukee 3
The Cubs scored 3 go-ahead runs in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly and a single off recently demoted closer John Axford to steal the victory at home.

St. Louis 5, Cincinnati 1
Cardinals starter Lance Lynn struck out 10 in six sharp innings and rookie pinch-hitter Matt Adams smacked a 2-run HR off Reds starter Bronson Arroyo to help Cincinnati win at home.

Pittsburgh 6, Arizona 5
Garrett Jones had 3 hits, including 2 RBI and the Pittsburgh bullpen held on late to preserve the win in the Arizona desert.

Oakland 9, Los Angeles Angels 5
Pinch-hitter John Jaso had a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning, and the A's blew a four-run lead before rallying to beat the Angels in the majors' final home opener.

San Francisco 9, Colorado 6
Brandon Crawford started San Francisco's rally from a four-run deficit that starter Tim Lincecum created by hitting a three-run homer, and Angel Pagan added a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning to lead the Giants to their eighth consecutive victory against the Rockies.

A.L. MVP Watch: Mike Morse, SEA

N.L. MVP Watch:  Justin Upton, ATL

Record Watch:  New York Mets catcher John Buck leads the National League with 14 RBI and is on pace for 283 for the season, which would break the record for most RBI by a catcher when Johnny Bench knocked in 148 in 1970.

Fantasy Spin From above, Mets catcher John Buck leads all catchers in total points and is a surprise to say the least.  He set his career high with 20 HR in 2010 and 66 RBI, so nobody's really sure where this is coming from, but ride the wave while it's good and grab him if he's still available.  Buck may not finish in the top 10 at catcher at season's end, but right now you can't find a hotter backstop.  Don't count on him being your team savior though, the Mets traded R.A. Dickey to Toronto over the winter and received highly touted catching prospect Travis D'Arnaud in return.  He's still in the minors, but the Mets plan to call him up this season as he they believe he has a bright future, and this will cut into Buck's production.

News & Notes:
Los Angeles Angles ace pitcher Jered Weaver was placed on the 15-day DL with a broken left elbow (non-throwing arm) and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

St. Louis Cardinals closer Jason Motte faces reconstructive elbow surgery very soon if his condition doesn’t improve.

Roy Oswalt made headlines when he mentioned he’d love to come back and pitch for his former team the Philadelphia Phillies.  Oswalt hasn’t pitched this season, and similar to last season, he’s hoping some team will sign him in June for the stretch run.

History Team History -  New York Mets
The Mets, or Metropolitans as they’re officially known, were born in 1962 when the National League expanded.  But let’s go back 4 years.  In 1958 the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, who were National League originals since 1883, moved to California and left New York city without a National League team.  Their fans defiantly refused to cheer for the hated American League Yankees, so they waited four years before they were awarded a team, thus the Mets, whose colors of blue & orange are a combination of the Dodgers & Giants.  Goes to show there’s definitely league loyalty in baseball.
In their first season of 1962 they went 40-122 and set a record for most losses in a 162 game season in baseball history.  Seven years later they pulled off a miracle by beating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles to win the 1969 World Series and establishing the nickname Miracle Mets.  They made 3 more World Series since, losing in 1973 in 7 games to the Oakland Athletics with Yogi Berra as manager, winning in 1986 in 7 games against the Boston Red Sox in the infamous “through Buckner’s legs” game, and losing in 2001 in 5 games against the New York Yankees in the Subway Series.
